WTF is the problem here

I just changed out my nutrient solution, but in the past day and a half i have this black build up in my hoses and on my roots what do I do. what caused this???????

thats root rot my friend, and pretty bad, what kind of system is that DWC?
I dont know how to solve the problem but thats some bad rootrot, half of fixing the problem is diagnosing the problem :)
 
I did a quick google search for dwc rootrot and getting rid of root rot dwc and came up with a bunch of stuff, could be lack of oxygen.

I have not encountered this prob myself - but the big brains on this site tend to recomend H2O2 for treating this type of stuff - but for my money i would really like to get to the root of the problem, an ounce of prevention .......

What size is your res?
Do you have oxygen constantly pumping into the res? and at what rate?.
Is the res TOTALLY light proof?
 
theres about 20 gallons of water in the res. I put in an air stone today. I made the assumption that the pump and the water moving around would oxiginate the water enough. thats what I get for assuming. can this be turned around? Im getting ready to ditch the system anyway. that big of a res is just to hard to handle for me. I would rather have multiple buckets easier to manage, and that way all my eggs arn't in one basket. my plants dont look like they have been affected yet by this problem...is there anyone out there that knows if i can reverse this???>?
 
airstone's are much needed. It is very possible to reverse the problem, just changing from one system, to many, during the grow might not be to great of an idea. Do it now while the roots are separate.
 
keep in mind that while seperate buckets are great for maintaining appropriate nute levels on a plant by plant basis the fact that the res s cotain less volume will mean that the PH etc will need more attention. Also please make sure you have at least one air line/stone per bucket, in DWC systems it is crucial that the water is oxygenated.
 
Immediately cut the infected roots off, at least an inch or two ABOVE the infection to help prevent reinfection. the plants will probably recover (depending on severity of infection), but their growth will be a bit stunted.

clean everything out super well, oxygenate the water, research using H2O2
 
Heard.....I added airstones this morning. I am cutting the roots tonight when the big light goes on. I cant do work in the veg chamber while the flowering light is off. How much h2o2 do I add, and also h202 is merely hydrogen peroxide correct?
 
hydroponic h202 is just hydrogen peroxide but in much higher consintrations than the one you buy at rite aid, regular h202 has about 6% h202 I think not sure while hydro 202 will have like 30% and will bleach your skin learned that the hard way :P
 
ok so i changed my set up got rid of the old 20 gallon set up and opted for a 10 gallon. much more convienent to change the res. water is f*ing heavy. got the res changed and put my future mother in her own bucket. Do I need to cut off the infected parts of the roots or will the oxygenated water kill the infection????I hate to loose the large root mass thats not infected....the other pic is of a big bud clone that is 21 days into flowering. Looking pretty good I might say, especially for my first hydro grow.

yea hard call, thats alot of rot to cut off but u might half to If its getting worse

dude are you f-ing kidding me?

you switched to a new reservoir, with a new nute solution WITHOUT cutting off the infected roots? you just contaminated your new reservoir.

cut the roots, switch to new, clean nets, clean the reservoir super well, etc etc.
 
What are your res temps? (Can not be above 72)
You need H202 pronto at 30% (will get rid of current root rot/ it will come back if you do not fix your res. environment)
Stop changing things without reading more!!! (I would not cut roots, unless you are prepared to cut them all of it would not make a big difference. This is only my common sense though, bigger minds may correct me on this:mrgreen:)
1 watt for each galon of water in the res (airstone)(Lucas wisdom)

Bigger minds have to take it from here, I never had the problem, but many turn this around so don't give up yet:mrgreen:!

I guess it comes down to the speed of the pathogen vs time till harvest. Realize though that this IS a plant pathogen that has infected your plants. It is only going to propagate, both onto other plants and through the vascular bundles of that plant.

my guess is a fungus, although bacteria can also cause this. either way...simply oxygenating the water wont work. at some point in the near future, you have to get rid of all the plants you have in that area, completely clean, COMPLETELY!!!! everything. get new nets, pump, hosing, etc, or get access to an autoclave and sterilize it all.

This is my advice, and a few things I remember from that plant pathology class a couple semesters ago. Just dont underestimate the ability of this stuff to spread, all the plants that are in the reservoir have likely been contaminated.

nothing at this point will successfully kill the pathogen which is inside the roots. they will travel up to the stem and down to the rest of the roots, and there is nothing you can do about it besides cutting off the infected part.. hydrogen peroxide will help clean off the exterior of the roots, although too much will injure them.

only fungus and bacteria cause this problem, and from what I remember most of the times its fungus, some sort of phytophtera or something. pathology isnt my field...but your problem is very clear cut.

an autoclave is a machine which steam-sterilizes anything in the chamber. 121 degrees celcius, 15 lbs steam pressure inside the chamber, it is enough to kill all microorganisms.
