Not sure about at the bottom, but mixed in. It helps drainage within the soil and also helps to aerate the soil a bit to keep it from compacting.

If you're only going to be gone a week, let them grow properly. No sense rushing something only to end up with inferior results, especially if you have someone you can trust to keep an eye on them. Ten weeks, even if they are already in full flowering stage, is rarely long enough.

I'd give them about two more weeks for sure. You'll be amazed at how much fatter and denser they're going to get when they truly near the end. Patience is key right now, but they do look great.
