It's hard to say without a picture, but from your description, I'm not sure you're 100% on what alternating nodes are. Your first nodes will be pairs of leaves, climbing up on alternate sides of the stem, whereas the alternating node is a single leaf only, climbing up alternate sides. Now if you...
