    Dave's Dual Area 51 Grow

A little bit better today. They're both growing finally. The Tahoe is especially looking strong. Libby is still looking a little ratty, but she's growing.

The 2 little girls aren't looking too great: Looks kinda like what happened last time in this bucket. I'm wondering whether the pump cycle needs to be different with this system. They seemed to perk up when I changed it to pump more often while I was flushing Lusinda. (Both pumps are...

My Hanna combo meter can be set to different conversion factors, from .5 to .75 I think. Mine is set to .66, but I think you're right that it should be .5 for American meters. (link to reference) But even if you use .5 to get 750 ppm, that still seems too much for a seedling. Try to get it...

Trimmed Lusinda & tied down some branches while flushing with plain water. I’m trimming a lot more this time. Last time the foliage got too thick, so I’m erring on the side of trimming too much. Front of Lusinda after trimming: Front after tying down the 2 tops: Back after trimming...

1.5 Siemens seems awfully high for a little plant. Are those the units you're referring to? I think on my pen it would come out to 1000 ppm. For a baby plant I'd keep it under 500. 300-400 ppm would be good until she gets bigger. I'm giving Lucinda, my bigger plant, around 600-700 ppm right...

That's some insulating sheeting whose name escapes me right now. But you can buy it in Home Depot or Menard's, Lowe's, etc. It's light proof, so I put it around my plastic buckets that aren't light proof.

9 oz is great the first time around with the Area 51's! The SGS-160 all white must be a rare model. Did you have to special order them? Welcome to the world of hydro, grower. Don't worry about jacking this thread with a few questions, that's not a problem at all. Regarding your tds/pH...

You bet, Gator. The closet temps are really good now, so the Green Gator filter & exhaust fan are working great.

Welcome, 822! Are you a new grower? Let us know if you have any questions about this type of hydro system. I usually run into every problem that can possibly happen, so maybe you'll learn from my mistakes and/or accidents -- what not to do. ;-) I also get a lot of good advice from experts...

Finally planted the other 2 seedlings in the 2nd tub. Here’s Libby: She’s a Barney’s Farm Liberty Haze. Here’s Tabitha: She’s a Cali Connection Tahoe OG. This sucker already outgrew Libby by a longshot and grew a thicker, sturdier stem. And she sprouted about a week later. Wow. Here’s...

I get it... You do that for the same reason that you cover your res to keep algae from growing. Good idea. I could use that white plastic that I put on my walls, too.

OK. That reminds me of some stories my brother told me that make me squeamish about contact with petrolem-based chemicals. He's been an exploration geologist for a major oil company for over 30 years and pro-oil, but he told me about "cancer alley" downwind of the oil refineries in Texas where...

Is that stuff safe for humans/pets? I use the Home Defense MAX outside the perimeter of my house to kill the ants. But I've been afraid to use it indoors at all. I don't suppose you guys use an organic version that I don't know about?

Thanks Gator... Plants are growing much better now, thanks to some good advice from people here.

That res is going to be heavy when filled with water, so I'm not sure if you need a bracket. Maybe just a rubber mat to keep if from sliding around? Of course, now I'll feel guilty if you tip it over... o_O

My seeds usually sink after 8 hours in water, but if they don't I just chalk it up to air bubbles clinging to the seed. I'm sure that Mr Dawg has a cool contraption that he built for sprouting seeds super efficiently. I'm dying to learn about it too!

Really nice setup there, GB. I see you got a couple of the Cree LED bulbs shining in back. Plants are looking nice and healthy. Looking forward to seeing the DWC bubbling along, too!

The algae is already clearing up where I sprayed the Neem oil. Before: After: But I also added about 25 ml of 35% H2O2 to the res. Then I filled a spray bottle with some res water and sprayed it on the algae. My Tahoe sprout looks strong: It’s even growing some leaves already. Big...

I've heard you refer to your way of germinating seeds using a 1/4" tube somehow... Can you describe it briefly? I thought I was doing it ok with the heat mat and tray of water. So far it's working, maybe a little slower than it could...
