It's strain dependent no one can answer that for you. Sure, if you took 100 plants of the same strain they may all finish AROUND the same time, but if you took 100 plants of different strains they'd all finish roughly at different times depending on strain. Do some research my friend

I'm an user of both a 600w & 400w dimmable ballasts. I don't usually dim mine, unless it gets hot in the tent then I'll dim the 400w since its open wing, because I've read/heard/somehow think I know that it changes the light spectrum so I don't like to do it

It sounds like you already have your answer but imo I'd move the light closer like 4-6 inches away if you can, but then again I don't like my plants to be that tall more bushy so shorter is better in my book

Yea man you should stick with HPS if you can, use CFL for side lighting or something if you can control the heat. The difference in light penetration is night & day with HPS & CFL, so if you have the choice stay with HPS dude you'll be much happier. I really only recommend CFL for first time...
