Why would you need to use a contactor? How many amps are you drawing? I have several timers rated for 12-15 amps that handle stringed T5 fixtures without issue. Are timers not available to you?

You want to add up your amp draw and use a cord that is thick enough to handle the draw. The more amp draw, the heavier gauge wire you will want to use. For what you are talking about, I would figure a 18 gauge wire would probably suffice, but a 16 would give you wiggle room. CFL's are not...

As long as the ratings are the same, you can use any manufacturers run cap. Mars is a company that we get most often. Most AC supply houses carry them, though you might even be able to pick one up from Home Depot or the like.
