I have used the 5 liter sterlite handy pails with great success. If this is what you are using, 2-3" from the bottom of the pail is good. The buckets taper to the bottom slightly so I went a bit more than 2".

I've never been fond of vermiculite, but have used a 60/40 perlite/coco mix and really liked it. I've settled on a 100% perlite bucket with a 3-4 inch cap of coco. I can go 4-5 days early flower and 2-4 days late flower between watering with 2gal buckets in a scrog setup under 250w HPS.

The Mazar x GWS was triploid ( 3 branch nodes) on each arm. All 6 heads were each triploid as well and could have went to 18 heads with another topping. I agree and seem to get my best results with a scrog setup.
