Hey Sub,

I have a few questions that I would like you to answer in particular. No offense to anyone else but Sub is the guru in this matter, but I do understand that he is a very busy man and possibly might not be able to answer so if anyone has any input feel free. I'm not trying to make this rocket science but this is my first crop and I don't want to put my crop in harms way.

1. You say you veg for 60 days. Do you add any nutes as you veg? And if so what?

2. Once you transplant into the pot with the SS do you add nutes until the roots hit the SS portion of the pot? If so what? If not would it be a good idea or bad idea and why?

3. Typically 2 weeks prior to harvest you flush your plants of nutes by feeding it plain water. How would you flush the plants when using SS or is it not necessary?

4. What is your opinion on topping vs fimming? Pros and Cons on both please.

I dont use nutreints unless a plant shows signs of deff in flower and thats rare.

2. Once you transplant into the pot with the SS do you add nutes until the roots hit the SS portion of the pot? If so what? If not would it be a good idea or bad idea and why? See Above

4. What is your opinion on topping vs fimming? Pros and Cons on both please. Well I dont fim you can see my extensive thread on bondage and how I train my plants

so if i had a flowering plant that im going to put into flowering, and her soil was completely depleted of nutrients or very close can you top dress the plant and use the just add water method for her full flowering cycle?, how much topdress would an average feeder need in a 5 gal bucket (probably about 4 gals of soil) also when you say a plant can go through its full life cycle you mean from rooted clone or seedling from a 1 gal pot, correct? im still a little confused on when to transplant into a parfait mix of SS an roots and when to flower

Yes if your plant is showing signs of nutrient deficiencies then simply top dress your plant with the SS mix and you should be good to go. As far as how much top dress to add I'm not 100% sure on that, but I would say just fill your pot so that there is still room to add water without it flowing over the rim of the pot. Maybe 1 to 2 gallons if that. Also if your plant does start showing nutrient deficiencies most likely it will be very close to harvest time so you shouldn't need much SS to top dress your plant with.

Ultimately when to transplant is up to you. Remember that once you switch to a 12/12 cycle your plants will double sometimes triple in size. So lets say you decide to veg until your plant is 18" in height then by the time you harvest your plant should be between 54" and 72" So when to transplant is up to you based on the space you have to grow.

i guess i have to just play around with it, cause my final resting pots are 5 gal buckets(ideally) so i go from a 16oz keg cup of roots to a 1 gal with roots, then this is where im at (first run with SS) their still about 2 weeks away from the light change only a few nodes and pretty rootbound, so my question is the 1/3 SS at the bottem and the mixture in the middle gonna feed for 10 weeks (2 weeks more veg and 8 weeks flower) with just water, i dont just want to have to keep haveing to dress plants or make teas, im doing this for the ease of things

here i make this a simpler question is the mentioned recipe 1/3 SS at the bottem of a container, 1/3 mixture of roots organic and SS, and top with roots, and plain inerrt soil around the root ball, is it a flowering cycle feeding recipe or is it designed for a coupel of weeks of veg and the full flowering cycle?

This Recipe is designed for the flowering cycle and it consists of only 1/3 to 1/4 of SS at the bottom of your pot. It is not a layered mix. Once the roots of your plant reach the SS mix, the mix should provide enough nutrients for the full flowering cycle. You may need to top dress if you are planting a strain that is a nutrient hog but rarely is this the case. To find out whether or not your plant is a nute hog do some research on the strain. Keep in mind when you transfer your plants into the flowering pots do not switch to a 12/12 light cycle right away. Give your plants about a week or two on a vegging light cycle to adjust to the new soil and to recoup from the transplant.

I would say that as long as you can visually see that there are no critters/fungus growing in the soil you should be ok. My batch had a pretty nasty smell to it as well for about the first week then it kind of disappated, but it was nothing that made me want to throw up. Then again I have a pretty strong stomach as I am a hunter and have accidentally busted open a gut sack or two in my days without throwing up. Are you cooking your batch in the sun without a lid or cover? I noticed that as I was cooking it in the sun with a cover is when it was producing the nasty smell but now I uncover while the sun is out and cover when the sun goes down to keep the soil warm and that seems to have taken care of the smell.

Thanks for the input everyone, very much appreciated.
I hunt to and like to think i have a strong stomach. I didint really notice the smell untill i had to buy another garbage can and liked the one i just bought better than the one it was already in (this one has a locking lid) and started shoveling and around half way it was hot in the middle (cooking itself probally) and thats really when the smell about made me lose it. Its probally normal but damn that was not what i was expecting.
If any wanted to know around how many gallons a full batch makes, i just recently finished and it filled 2-45gal trash cans to the top and 1-45gal up around halfway. So all in all around 113 gallons or so.I had to add around 2 cubic ft. of coir to mine becouse i couldnt get any soil with coir in it.

So your telling me that ur not supposed to veg plants in this mix but transplant to it when your gonna flower? So then what the hell does sub veg in and what does he use to feed? Now you got me all confused.

He veges in straight High Quality Organic Potting soil such as Roots. He does not add any nutes during veg as his opinion is "The plants don't need anything extra unless they tell you"

you veg and bloom in his soil...
"Do not put seeds or clones directly in this mix. It is a concentrated mix used in conjunction with base soil. Place it in the bottom of each finishing container"

Nate this quote is straight from Subs how to. If you were to place it in the FINISHING container I would guess that is the same thing as the flowering container. Now if you start your seed in the 7 gallon pot then yes start to finish there is enough SS mix for the whole life cycle of the plant, but it does not make sense to start a plant in a 1 gallon pot with the bottom being SS then transplanting to a 7 gallon pot with the roots of the plant having to grow through regular soil to reach SS once again.
