Cool Man,

Keep the lights close, like a couple inches away.
Then when they get 4 or 5 new little branches (sets of nodes) cut the top off.
Keep lights close and top again. Each plant will stay short and have four main colas.

This is my first ebb and flow system. How long should I run the water timer. I have heard some run for 15 mins every 4 hrs. Does this sound reasonable. Does anyone have any insight?

Here ya go mate!!! hope this helps....what i used to do was water till my over flow start working took like 5 mins then i would water 6 hours later then another 6 then another 6, but i felt the last watering was unessecary due to the fact that the lights were turning off at this paticular timing arangement. but if you find you are just using the standed electrical plugin wall timer then you have only got a 15min window. this is fine. you can bump up the water flow on your pump to circulate the water more efficiently this will keep DO (dissolved oxygen) levels happy throughout the watering process also
