Incandescent bulbs produce way too much heat with too little light. You'd have to place the bulbs withing 6 inches and that would likely fry the plant.

side lighting and supplementing with Red during flowering is a wonderful idea, but as Mursh already said, Incandescent bulbs are one of the worst things you could do, almost like poisoning them as far as how they will negatively affect the development. Same with the Red colored CFL's (twisty's), they are coated with a paint that blocks most of the light output and are incredibly inefficient, you'd need about 10 of them to equal the same amount of red already contained in the average 6500k daylight cfl.
 
Just get 2700k-3000k Compact Fluorescent Lamps, eitherT-2 or T-5.
T2 lights are skinnier twists, and much stronger.

Believe me, CFL's wiull get annoying real fast.
 
Day 35 flower. Not feelin the growth in the fixture using 3000k, Fiji, Red sun, Actinic, 454,Flora Sun.

By far the one running away with the growth is the fixture running the 3000ks mixed evenly with the Flora Suns. Which is great for me because it's the cheapest setup:leaf:

I'm done with any bulb that costs more than $12. No need. Bottom line is you need these bulbs SUPER close to the plant or you will get airy buds. Period. Co2 would definitely help as well but I don't have it in this room.

All things being equal and considering how close your lights must be to your plants, I will probably opt for switching this room into a veg room and filling these fixtures up with 5500 and 6500k bulbs and just using my other 2 rooms for Flowering with HPS.

As much as I like the T5's I just need too damn many fixtures in this room to cover the amount of plants I need to cover. Unless you are flowering plants that are less than 14" tall, you will need to keep it at a max of 2-3 under each 8 bulb. Scrog would be a good idea.

As for commercial production using T5's. Forget it. The light management is a chore.

I am coming to a similar conclusion as LV, at lest for veg. I was running a ATI Special Blue Actinic next to a Quantum Grow (6500), on either side is a Red Sun + Coral Wave and on the other a UVL Aquasun + CW (still testing, thinking the AS is a good V/F bulb). The main leaves were not what you would call droopy, but not reaching for the lights. Yesterday I replaced the ATI with another Quantum Grow. Within a couple hours the leaves were no longer droopy (now horizontal) and this morning all are reaching up above horizontal.

I am confident that the Red Lifes + FloraSuns will outperform the typical 2900 for flower though.
 
I would have to agree with you LV. I have tried several different methods while using T5 and keeping them short and as close as possible to the light is key for yield. Light penetration is limited but side lighting will help of course. This technology (T5HO) is great for the patient that wants to grow his/her medication within his/her needs. Bigger than a micro grow but large enough to fill most patients needs. Honestly, I really do not anticipate a much larger yield with the new bulbs that I use but I do expect a better quality overall. I really do not see this used in commercial aspects in Flower except maybe as supplemental lighting.

With all of that said, the importance of good genetics and control of your growing environment (Temps, RH%, Containers, ect.) plays a huge part of your success.

Nice grow LV..........and yeah I agree about the difference between(specialty) and cool/warm white bulbs to be negligible.......lesson learned:leaf:

All good. There are still a ton of people ignoring what I and others have already learned. They are too busy looking at soectral graphs of $25 bulbs that they have to special order from an Arctic Albino Monk.
 
I haven't realy spent as much as all if you that tried all these different bulbs out all I have now is 2- flora suns 1- coral wave 1- 3000k with 3 plants under them

Now I can't speak for commercial grow but for me growing my own meds these 4 bulbs do me great but as for the work with raising lights that isn't much for me but again I only have 1 - 4 bulb fixture
 
spectra-max-516.jpg I really wish they didn't discontinue this light. 300w of HPS coupled with 4- 4ft t5s sounds like it would've been an excellent blending of technologies. This is called the Spectramax 516 by Sunsystems. I am going to start bugging sunlight supply to see how much they'd charge to make me one
 
There are many many similar hood on the market for aquariums if you're really into going that route. They tend to be really pricey though.

Bad Boy problem

One bulb hardware does not turn easily, eventually causing one of the green thingies that locks the bulbs in place to break off one of the 2 wings. I called Quantum after my email was ignored for 2 days. The tech who helped did not know that they pop in/out. While he was figuring that out he mentioned that the females (he called them tomb stones) can be pushed in to make for a tighter fit to the bulbs. Anyway he put a couple green thingies in the mail

Since replacing one ATI Blue Special Actinic and one FlorSun with 2 Quantum Grow bulbs (5 days ago) my plants have grown several inches in height as well as breadth + main stalk thickening. Leaves are getting larger + lots of secondary branching nodes developing. Also using 2 CWs + one Red Sun, mostly to make sure it doesn't fizzle during flower.

When I flip I will go with 2 Flora Suns + 2 CWs + 2 Red Lifes + 2 Quantum Flower. Thinking maybe 4 Red Lifes instead of 2Q Fs but not sure the 500 nms of the 2 FloraSuns will be enough.

Wouldn't the T5s effectivness be hindered greatly by the distance needed for the HPS though? seems like a waste to me imo
