Coco Growers Unite!

Here are some Buds from a Pre98 Bubba Kush grown in Coco using Canna Coco A+B, CaliMagic and AN Nirvana. Coco is the way to go in my opinion.

Coco saved my life. Amazing vigor and Yeild. More Manageable and you can be a mad scientist. I'm never use any other medium. although I do like Rockwool. so far Cocos been the most efficient fastest way to go.

has anyone had an issues with PM in coco? ... seem to me my plants immunity to PM and mites is way high in coco? i do seem to get root aphids and white flies always trying to set up shop on me though.
 
Never had PM. I have had fungus gnats but they are easy to treat. I've thought I've seen a mite or two but never been fully infested luckily. I did see a little thing flying around my mother this morning. Not sure what it was. I also had a little green spider set up shop (web going from light to top of one plant) so I'm guessing I have a few bugs in there or he wouldn't have moved in.

I tried DWC for two grows before I went to coco. Got root rot both times, even had a rez chiller the second time. I wish I had saved myself serious $s and agony by going with coco and smart pots from the start. Way cheaper and easier with kickass results.
 
This is my 1st coco run, and I'm have a problem that just popped up when I transplanted into 3gal coco hempy bucket.

Here's the setup - plants vegged 5wks in 3qts Basement Mix (Coco based soil substitute, vegg's better than FFoF) topped twice very healthy.
Nutes; 1 tbsp Osmocote Plus in 3qt pot.
Coco: Roots Organic, Brick
Hempy bucket: Coarse perlite in the rez to above the hole, then coco layered with OC to the top. (I've been running CRF's for over 2yrs in perlite hempy's so the Osmocote isn't the problem)
I believe my problem, is with Cal-Mag, I think I've over done it.

Water: NORMAL (what I've run in perlite setup) 50/50 tap/RO with- 1/2ml cal/mag, 8 drops Floralicious +, & ph'ed to 6.0.

Now with the coco, I expanded the coco, with ph'ed 6.0 & 10ml/gal cal-mag, and dryed in the sun to bagged moisture.
At transplant 1st water I added 5ml/gal cal-mag instead of the normal 1/2ml/gal.

So now I've got light/lime green new growth within a day of transplant on one plant and at 3 days I see the others going that way. Also the edges are curling up and u can see the leaf edges sharpen in points. The lower leaf's have shown a little twisting.

Did I over-do the cal-mag? OR am I still deficient?

The only change in growing system is coco and the amount of cal-mag added

Seems you just need to build up the natural buffer of the coco. I feed aggressive the first week or so of xplant. That builds the buffer up of needed Ca and P. then your new growth will be all the same. Just going by looks. Nothing looks wrong with the plant IMO. Using Cal mag after buffer seems to eventually lead to lock out later in flower. I quit using it! And better results. Unless of course your water is RO or deficient from tap. Just my two cents bro.

My water is deficient in CA, so I'll have to add some, but I think 1/2 to 1ml/gal would be better than 5ml/gal

After my post I ran a few gals of ph'ed tap through all the buckets. 12 hrs into lights they looked way over watered, something I've never seen using perlite. When lites started todays cycle I tipped the hempy buckets and drained as much water off as I could. Gonna let em' dry out a bit, then start again. They look a little better already after the flush and drain. I must have over done the cal-mag.
 
In case it hasn't been mentioned..

One thing I've learned with coco, test the EC of the waste water every time, if you don't know your plants very well.

If the EC comes out higher then what you poured in, lower EC levels on your next feed, depending on how much it's raised, determines how much less you feed next time. If the EC comes out lower, your plant could use a stronger feeding. +/- .2-.3EC difference is fine, continue your feed schedule.

eg; Feed with 1.5EC, it comes out at 2.0, lower your next feeding to at most 1.0EC, if it rises again, flush. If it comes out at 1.0, increase EC to about 1.7-1.8.
 
Well my girls are not getting any better.

Can someone WHO IS NOT USING COCO specific nutes tell me what is the normal amount of cal-mag they add to their water??? Please.

These photos were taken 2 days ago, they don't look this good today.

To me it looks like a cal deficiency. This shit doesn't happen in perlite, so whats up with this coco crap.
 
I'm using GO and I've used GH inorganic nutes (micro/bloom) in past grows with coco as well. I'm currently putting 10mg of GO camg per 1g of water. I feed with every watering. I'm using RO water. With GH, I was adding 5mg of botanicare calmag per 1g of water. I fed with every watering and was using RO water.

Your original post is confusing because you talk about a reservoir so I didn't respond. You can mix 25% perlite with coco. I've gone both ways and found the plants preferred the 25% perlite.

You also seemed to indicate overwatering in the first post, but again, you mentioned a reservoir so I didn't respond. Only water when the pots are light.

One last thing -- if you are using inorganic nutrients (not familiar with osmocote) you need to flush your plants every 4 weeks or so with 1/4 strength nute water OR 5mg molasses and 5mg epsom salt per g.
 
Has anyone ever found other plants in their coco ? I've went in my grow last night and found 3 new additions lol. 2 of the newly germinated seedlings looked identical and 1 looked completely different to the other 2. I can only assume they came in the 10L coco bricks i am using ? Anybody else ever experienced this ?

i had exactly the same thing. only one plant though, looked a bit like a clover once it sprouted leaves. i just pulled it once i realized it wasn't my MJ

Thank you for your input, it helps alot. If you are not familiar with a hempy bucket I can see where it is real confusing. Hempy buckets have no holes in the bottom for drainage, they have a single hole on the side of the bucket 2" up from the bottom which creates a small rez for a passive hydro setup. You need to use a soilless medium. I've always used straight perlite and it works great, but I've heard so many good things about coco that I had to give it a try. Even with the coco I filled the bottom of the bucket with coarse perlite to above the hole in the bucket side, I didn't want the coco sitting down there like a wet mop head. I'm using Botanicare cal-mag so I'll go with the 5ml/gal and give them a chance to recover. Thanks again.
