Drug test for welfare

Loopholes? If the government chooses to subsidize something or to contract with a company those are loopholes? You're saying laws are loopholes... The government shouldn't contract out? Should never subsidize? If you are against that then so be it but it's a very very different issue.

I think gastanker's point here is on target. Farmers and CEOs are privetely employed and should thus not need the level of scrutiny appropriate for public service workers, be they elected, appointed or hired.
Pols are notionally employed directly by us, the people. We have the right to review them, say by requiring they submit to the tests they mandate for others. Private jobholders are not in that loop. My opinion. cn

I'm less interested in earning debate points by following a logical faultline and more interested in practical solutions.

Frankly i think the idea of requiring elected and appointed public servants to be drug-tested - publicly - is a brilliant one. It recouples policymakers to policy. cn

You're not the only one.

Because the farmers and CEOs contribute... They positively impact the economy.
Not necessarily. Farming is one of the most highly subsidized professions and CEO's can squirrel away their income into creative tax exempt, and tax deferred, products and investments.

I cannot help but roll my eyes at all this trash collector and boeing nonsense. I don't know about your states but my state's ebt card has a "food stamp" balance and also a "cash balance". People can just swipe the thing at an atm and get cold hard cash to buy booze or drugs or whatever. No scam required. Just a pin number. No recipets required. Buy whatever you want.

To then suggest that drug testing be done is absolutely hilarious to me. We can't even reform the system to where we can see where all the money goes, but let's run right out and start collecting jars of piss at 40 bucks a pop. Yes, that sounds like a real solution. Just to be safe, let's also appoint a board of highly paid suits to oversee the new drug testing program, and another board of suits to implement it, and another board to figure out where the money went in the first place. We'll save millions.

In Michigan cash assistance is only available if you have kids, I think... this seems to be the case in most places.

It is true that there's a problem with people selling their food stamps and using the money to buy drugs... the solution is... just legalize the damn drugs and give them away for free, they really cost very little to make when legal... hand out dissolving fentanyl tabs, that stuff is so potent they could supply a huge addiction for pennies a day. China does this, and they have less problems than we do... our methadone clinics won't give you more than a day's dose, so you're completely shackled, and it's expensive as hell... virtually all real life problems/consequences of opiate addictions are related to supply: cost, continuity of availability, and quality (contaminated, cut, unpredictable potency, etc.)...

Funny I know people on welfare. And when I mention McDonalds is hiring or something like that they always scoff at me. "I make more on welfare" is a common response. Or "I'm not going to flip burgers or clean up other peoples shit" is another. If we stopped babying these people they'd get their lazy asses out there and work.

It has more to do with feeling exploited, I think. That, and it not being worth it to them. I know people who would rather roam the forest homeless than have to take a job working indoors. Some things just make some people miserable, and it's certainly not worth it if all the paycheck does is allow you to stay alive so that you can keep going to that job. At least if you're unemployed you have free time and can study in the library... work toward something better.

In Illinois...you can not get any cash...just food n beverage..are you sure about this?
If you are addressing me, yes, i'm positive. They just passed some kind of "reform" and the biggest gripe is that it did not address the abuse of the cash balance, it just made it so people can't swipe the card at a register to buy beer or ciggs (that used to be perfectly legal.)

A woman was just fired in new hampshire because she refused to let a guy buy beer with his ebt. I guess it's still legal there. If i weren't on my phone i'd put the article up.

That is certainly wrong.... and needs to be addressed... I do not even think soda and candy and garbage food making this country even fatter should be allowed.

For sure, most of that stuff is outright toxic and dangerous to your health... after a while cooking everything from scratch I couldn't even stomach what most people eat. So much salt, sugar, artificial preservatives... shit's nasty.

Elected officials should be drug tested. Hell, I'll hold the cup for the first few of the hypocritical pricks.

Let me guess those engineers are above working at a gas station or being a janitor? Couple months ago I went looking for a job and put out over 20 resumes. I got about 8 calls that were decent jobs that other people were just not willing to work.

You know why? Then their unemployment benefits get cut. Their benefits are related to their previous pay, so if they were making 60k and take a job that pays 10k they will suddenly plunge into poverty. BTW, those benefits are paid by employers, not you, so please don't bitch about them.

Also, if you take a job that's not related to your field, your skills go into decay. The new job takes up all your time and energy so you don't practice your skills anymore. This makes you even less employable.

Wait, these people can't afford $34 in order to make thousands for doing nothing? And they are drug users? And you think they are going to be able to eventually get a job? Why are you opposed to them just going to rehab?

Why don't you go to rehab?

Well it's my opinion we shouldn't be paying these people anything. Can't feed yourself? Make room for someone who can.

If they imposed policies like these, there would be a popular revolution the next day. Kinda hope it happens.

What would help is no more Soda..candy and junk food for on stamps.

That reminds me of something funny. I've heard a lot of people complain about seeing people buy a bunch of junk with EBT. This, I understand. But now that there's a lot of people on EBT who cook everything from scratch, buying healthy produce and actually making good food with very little to work with (EBT benefits max out at $5/day per person if you have no income)... and now I hear people bitching about how the "elite food stampers" are "sucking us dry" with their "gourmet self-catered meals."

I think that's invasion of privacy drug testing people for any reason. I can't say that I condone people selling their food stamps to buy drugs with or some other crazy shit. Welfare itself is quite a bit different than food stamps. I still don't think drug testing people is right. The people who want shit like this will end up having big brother telling us everything that we can and can't do. And you really think that they will let us smoke our weed...keep dreaming! I feel like my rights are being taken away every single day little by little. You are being watched all the time and every thing you do is being criticized by someone else. Please just let me fucking be. Stay out of my business!

i worked the register at a supermarket in the late 90s and people would pay with WIC. WIC rules are that you can only buy certain types of cereals, juices, formula, etc. you wouldn't believe the fit some people pitched when i told them they couldn't get a certain type of cereal with the WIC check.

i quickly figured out the reason they were so pissed was that they had been all over the city and "no one ever gave them a problem before". the reason no one gave them a problem at the corner store is that sometimes the store didn't have the correct items and had to "substitute". also because they go fucking psycho when someone tells them no. at the time i was making $5.50/hr and to be honest i didn't really feel like having an epic battle every time someone came through my line with one of those things, so i eventually just let shit slide. i was 16 making minimum wage. i wasn't there to get shot at and i'd rather be fired than stabbed.

that shit is probably electronic now (we processed WIC by hand with a pen) and that type of stuff may not happen as frequently, but the problem of people buying "no-no" items with assistance funds is a lot wider than just "the rules". there are a lot of people who have to do their jobs correctly to make it work, unless everything is completely electronic.

If you are on welfare you are having an economic crisis right? If you are having an economic crisis you should cut back on spending right? To cut back on spending you get rid of luxuries right? Are drugs luxuries? Are they expensive luxuries? Are they habit forming luxuries?

Perhaps because being unemployed is extremely stressful? Take away even the smallest of luxuries - hell, to take one toke a day would cost less me than 10 bucks a month - and they will be even more stressed out and miserable. Do you really hate the poor that much? You expect them to be miserable? Even if costs little more to let them at least have one single thing in their life they can enjoy?

I am in the swimming pool business and have to go on Unemployment Compensation for 3 1/2 months in the winter because the pools are closed and there is a lack of work. Thanks for thinking about me. Because of your required drug test my family and I just lost everything. See not so black and white.
