First Official cfl grow

Hello all! I'm back! I had my internet shut down for a while, but finally got it back on. Estella is growing very well it seems, she has lost most of her leaves, and is budding decently I think. I have no idea, this is my first grow. I wanted to update with some pics though. Here she is!


I am not sure if trichs are forming or not. I bought a pocket microscope from Radio Shack, but my hands shake too much to use it. I can't seem to get steady enough to look clearly. Working on that lol. I also bought a PH tester kit, going to use that tonight when I water.
Question? If a person is supposed to flush the plant 2 wks prior to harvest, how do I know when that is? This is bagseed, I have no idea what it's range is for flowering, i.e., 8 wks, 10 wks, etc. I am almost up to 8 wks. Dec. 11 will be the 8 wk mark. I want to flower until my buds get bigger, they are pretty small.
Other question? Those small buds I showed, on the stems, will they mature as much as the top cola's? Or will they just be no good? Any help is appreciated.

Beautiful mini buds but I remember the plant being quite a bit...bushier... what happened? And what neuts are you using? for being in flower for a while your leaves sure look rich in nitrogen.

I have one of those pocket microscopes myself I love the thing...when I can get it to work!! Yes my hands shakes too much too, but I've found once I get a butter zone dialed in on that sucker and press it reallllll close to a bud I can use it no problem it's just the refocusing that sucks.

Yea don't start flushing yet from the looks of her leaves she's a sativa dominant hybrid she will likely have more toward a 10 week flowring period (in the looks of this plant longer than that maybe) also hows your lighting now days?

The small buds will mature to be some (crosses fingers) dank bud but they will not mature as the same exact speed as your nice delicious top colas. With a plant like that I'd likely take the colas off one week continue to flush then take the lower fluff but thats me.

Nice Looking grow so far allforit! Good job man. I have enjoyed reading this thread and since i am only three weeks into my grow, its cool to see how well your LST worked. I plan on doing the same due to height restrictions. Ill keep popping int to see how you finish..Give Estella a hug for me..lol.

surely looks like a sativa dominant strain (madona is it?) 10 weeks or so i guess should do the job. start flushing in the 7-8 week.

HippySmoke, I found the problem! My plant was a ton bushier, I almost cried when I looked at "old" pics of her from a few wks ago lol. She lost all her leaves because I am in lockout. I have no idea why I am in lockout, but I am. I bought a pH test kit this last weekend, because I was getting super concerned about the loss of all the leaves. I tested my tap water, it's fine, it's at 6.8. Then I tested the water with Fox Farms Big Bloom nute in it, and it rose up to 7.2! I though nutes were supposed to bring the level down a bit, so I expected it to be 6.2 or so. But nope, it was higher. So, I fed Estella, and tested the runoff, it was fucking 7.8!!!! Dammit!! So, she is not getting nutrients apparently. I don't know much about lockout, been trying to read up on it. I don't know what to do. I'm sad, I'm bummed, and I learned my lesson: TEST FOR pH LEVELS A LOT!! So that way you can correct it before it gets this bad! I bought the aquarium tester kit, it has pH down in it, but I haven't used it yet, because I don't know if it's safe? Will it hurt me or the plant if I use it, since it's for aquariums? It's some liquid stuff. I have no idea. But, anyway, after testing the runoff, I flushed her, big time. I took her into the tub, got her naked, and flushed the shite outta her for like 3 or 4 gallon of water, probably more lol. I was in there for a long time lol. Then after the flush, I tested the runoff, and it was still 7.8!!! So I have no idea what to do. I'm bummed. I like your advice on harvesting though, take the top cola's, let the others grow for a wk more or so. That sound good to me. I want to get all I can from this plant, the way it's looking, I might be lucky to get a quarter oz. out of the dry buds. Just doesn't seem to be much bud on her. But I don't know, this is my first grow.
Hey Arch, thanks for stopping by! 1 piece of advice, depending on your lights. If you use cfl, then make sure you lst all your branches to the same height. You will most likely have to do this daily, or every few days, depending on how fast you are growing. Reason being, you need them all to be 1 to 2 inches from the lights, for maximum benefit. My problem was that I didn't do that, and so I had some very slow and probably stunted growth. Now I have her done right, and all the cola's are within 2 inches of the lights. Good luck! Ask lots of questions, I know I do lol !

I think I will feed her 50% nutes till then, because she is in lockout, I dont' know what food she is able to eat. I am confused by this lockout thing. I have no idea how to fix it, or if the plant is recieving any nutrients right now or what. Scary place to be.

All, I am going to be taking pics in a few mins, I will post them as soon as I get done. Lights come on in about 10 mins. I am going to check the water, empty any that has accumulated in the bottom of the container from yesterday's flush, and pH it. I swear this morning when I checked her, that her buds were bigger. lol. It's true. I swear they got bigger after the flush, after about 8 hrs more of light. Seemed to me anyway, I am hoping so. lol. They probably didn't but oh well. I will get pics up in a little bit.

This is the first flush I have done on her, should I have flushed her more often, to keep the pH down? Would that work? Do people do that? Or is that bad? Check these out. I'm really downed about the fact that in this new set of pics, you can see the trim leaves getting dark tips, yellowing. They are going to die aren't they? So what do I do? Oh shit you'all! I just learned something! I'm checking into this whole pH thing, and duh!! I'm an idiot! The pH of the runoff and of the water/nutes combo is not that high! The reason it said it was, is because the color of the nutes, and of the runoff, screws up the test results!! I have a color based system, it's for aquariums. So, of course the colors were darker than they should be, I have tainted the test. There is no color to aquarium water. Not like runoff from soil and nutes. So, my pH might be ok. In which case, it's something else, unless my plant is simply getting uber close to harvest, and I should be flushing and getting ready to chop. But if those are trichs in the pics, then they are all still clear. Not choppy choppy time yet.

When the trichs are 30 clear/70 amber, 70 clear/30 amber, 50/50, what? When do I chop this honey? How do I know when to stop nuting, how do I know when there are about 2 wks left in the flower cycle??? It's bagseed, I don't know strain or anything. help! gulp. I have no idea!

Yea I love feedback myself makes me really appreciate the RIU community.

Oh she was so much bushier it was very impressive how much foliage your little bush had. Nutrient lockout takes a while to set in unless you have an extrememe PH change, have you been flushing every 3 to 6 waterings thoroughly to rinse away any excess or unused salts and fertilizers? Too much excess can cause anything from basic PH changes to full on lockout. That and the flushing process helps to keep your nutrient balance even and measured.

PH test kit is one of the most valuable tools you'll ever need. Test water and soil ph OFTEN I got a 3 way moistness, soil ph and light meter (a good one too!) for $10 at my local grow store. Like I said lockout takes a minute typically but the more you stay on top of it the more impressive of a plant you can keep up.

I try to stick to an organic medium as much as possible but I have used that aquarium PH down in emergencys, but even then ONLY veg after flower if it ain't organic I don't put it in there. If the product was only for my own personal consumption I wouldn't worry about it as much but I grow medicine for my old lady and as such I hold high standards to the Marijuana I provide her, and the other medical patients I "Help out".

Ok ya flushed her to attempt to deal with the PH issue is there any way you could get some cheap reverse osmosis filtered water for your next flush? My tap at least has a HIGH amount of chlorine it it, which evaporates off just fine but if not evaporated... lets just say chlorine concentrations built up in your soil are no good for a number of reasons.

People do flush to regulate PH and or excess neuts left in the soil as stated in the precursor post Note for your next grow.

Now your trim leaves getting yellow... dude I am telling you that plant is TOO GREEN not a joke, that dark green your leaves are exhibiting (and the few burnt fan leaf tips not many) are signs of way too much nitrogen dude. Yellowing happens when you flower it's just like balding or your beard going grow it happens to us all... well except for chicks but you get what I mean. Don't get scared when ya see it, embrace it. Do you remember the primary value of nitrogen and what production it provides for? Leaf growth. Now personally I don't like me a leafy bud, I like a nice dense flowery bud, and to avoid stimulation of leaf growth the nitrogen is tapered down during flower. Now your working with fox farm bloom neut right? The thing is with a premixed neut like that it's one size fits all, and many strains have perticular needs for a perfect bud exhbiting all the important traits of the strain.

My beard is greater than this Reorx... just had to pop that in but what white clear hairy lookin thing? you got your microscope to work? Cause yes there are clear trichomes my friend, those are immature. Trichomes start out clear, then go milky and end their life in an amber color. You of course already know about harvesting when the trichomes are at different maturities to get some slight (some less slight than others) changes to the effects of your high.

HippySmoke!! Thank you for the awesome replies!! That was great to read! Made my day. I don't know what I'm smoking, except I'm baked lol.
I am baked again, I tell ya. The last 2 days, I been smoking the same stuff, as I have for the last 2 or 3 wks actually. But it's definately hitting me harder. I don't use much, maybe 2 bowls a night, meaning in about 5 hours or so. I use it for chronic pain and dizzyness, and also for thinking and doing things differently. I have learned to listen to her though, for sure. I used to, when I was in my 20's, just smoke the hell outta it. Like, eighth a day. At work, home, whatever. But since I started again, a bit ago, for pain management, I realized I needed less. I had quit for years. Like, 10 yrs or so. And I have just managed to use so little that I keep my tolerance low I guess. It's just crap stuff I have now. That's why I have my baby. I am tired of getting crap stuff for high cost. Brown is all it is. I remember when I lived in the PNW, I had awesome stuff, for a great price. Northern LIghts, Alaskan Thunderfuck, all kinds from Cali, it was great! Here where I am now, it's dry as hell and bad as a bald tire.
So, I took in all that you said, although I am going to re-read it a few times later, to sink it into the ole brain. Let me answer a few questions.
1. First off, thank you very much for complimenting my plant!! I appreciate that a lot! I have been giving her my all. She sure was bushy, she was so beautiful. I wish I could have her in that stage all year round, in my living room. Such a truly pretty plant. I would like to have it as a houseplant, even if it didn't have smoke value! If it was just normal, I still would want it around.
2. No, I didn't flush until just now, with this crisis. That was silly of me. I realize it now, looking back. I thought about it a few times, but was like, nah, all that stuff flows out in the runoff. Nope. So, lesson learned for sure! As for pH, that lesson is learned! Often, 3 or more times a week. I'm buying a pH digital pen from Bulk Reef Supply. It's 20 bucks. Should do the trick.
3. Sorry my last post was so confusing. I read a post the other day, while in the panic of lost bushiness (ROFLMAO!) and it said that aquarium test kits cannot give true results with runoff or with water/nutes. Because it's meant for water with no coloring. My fish tank is pretty clear, and it's not the cleanest water, but it's still clear. Nutes turn the water brown, and runoff does it thing. And since I have to match the color that's in the test tube to a color chart, the results should be wrong, since I colored the water before I put the test drops in. Does that make sense? I am having a had time describing it. Or is that information wrong? If it is, then yes, my pH is 7.8 lol. ouch
4. Yes, I can get some good water. I can get triple osmosis filtered water for like, $1 a gallon. So, I will get some. Now, if I am right, is the pH of neutral water 7.0? Because that would be too high. But triple filtered, maybe the pH is way lower?
5. To grow better, I should invest in separate nutes. Not just some pre-mixed stuff. I could do that. I'm willing to do that. Where can I find the right % of each of the 3 major nutes? For veg, and flower.
6. Thank you! For clearing up that white/hairy/clear mess lol. Great Reorx's beard! lol. That's from Flint Fireforge, from the Dragonlance novels. Excellent reads. Love em. Flint is a great character. I haven't yet been able to keep the hands from shaking enough to see correctly through the scope, but I am working on it. I want to see it lol. I bet it looks kick ass. 50/50 sounds good. WAIT!!!! DAMN. Now I am cornfused again! lol. If clear is immature, then it won't be 50/50 clear/amber. It will be 50 milky, and 50 amber, right???? Or is it really 50 clear, and 50 amber??? Dang.
Ok, so I am totally freaked out about harvest!!! Totally! I have no idea what I am doing!! I don't want to ruin my bud. I don't want harsh smoke, I don't want mold or fungus to grow on it during curing. I have really no idea what to do, except what I read. Ok, here goes. I will put a rundown of what I know, and maybe you can fill in the blanks for me?? That would be cool.
I plan on harvesting the top cola's first. I will have to hang them in a closet, dark, no light. Right? No light? Dark? With a fan? Heat about 75 or so? I don't understand the whole, " put in paper bag" thing. Then, I want to harvest the small buds on there. Like a week later. I want to give the whole plant time to mature, if possible. If not, I have no idea what to do with the immature buds. Use them? Or what? So, after the stems snap, it's dry enough, and I put it in an air tight container, like mason jar or snap lid tupperware, etc. Then, every 2 days or so, I have to "burp" the container, let in air for what? 5 mins? 10 mins? How long? See, I'm confused lol. Ignorant, really, is more like it. Not afraid to admit it. I learn quick, that's what counts lol. So, do I trim them when they are dry, or do I trim them before I hang them up to dry?? I really didn't want leafy buds either. I screwed up on a few things though. First grow, bound to happen, I guess. But I didn't want to make any mistakes. And they say people who use cannibus have no drive! BS. I hate that crap. I am a professional, I make a good living, except I can't save money to save my ass. lol. I spend too much. And that's really not funny, I should stop laughing at myself and start saving cash I served in the Army, I did my time, out on medical. So I did what "society" dictates, and yet still looks down on since I use cannabis. I use responsibly. Not like alcohol, which I sadly abuse. And hate it. My whole Dad's side of the family died of alcohol induced death. Suicide, liver failure, etc. All with alcohol. Except they drank whiskey. I drink Tequila. And only Jose Cuervo. And Mezcal, my favorite. And yeppers, shucky darn, I sure dang do eat the worm! That's the best part! lol.

So, should I not use nutes on her for the rest of the cycle? That's my main question I think, right now. I am going to take some pics, and I will post them in a few. I will get as many different ones as I can, try to show her true color best as I can. I have some light settings on my camera, and I think that is affecting the photo's. Not to say she isn't too green, she very well probably is! But I want to try my best to give you an accurate picture, in case mine last night were not accurate. Just double checking, I guess. Yeah, this stuff I'm on, whoa buddy. Heavy shit. What is this? Labrador man. I never heard of that shit before man. Yeah man, my dog ate my stash. I had to follow him around for 3 days man. ROFLMAO!! HippySmoke, here are tonight's pics. I hope this helps to show the color a bit better. Last night, I took the pics with the cabinet door mostly closed, so the lighting was kinda dark. So tonight, I changed a light setting on my camera, and took pics in the light, basically. I think these show more of a true color of Estella right now. Hopefully. Like I said, I am terrible with my camera lol.



These are a bit light. lol. Can't seem to get it correct. So, it's the average between the 2 sets of pics lol. She is green, on the trim, but it's still not as dark green as she was in veg. At least not to my eye. But then, I wear glasses, and my vision sucks lol. What you think?

Hello again, Wanabe lol. The little things are Y connector's. You can pick them up at Home Depot, Lowe's, whatever kind of hardware store you have will work. Also, I have plug adapter's, I think that's what they are called. They plug directly into the socket, power strip, what have you.
If you do a CFL, make sure you put the lights in there as best you can, towards the top of the box, but not too close, they do put out some heat. You don't need a house fire lol. I have mine at around 3 or 4 from the top of the cabinet, and the top outside of the cabinet still gets pretty darn warm. But you can combat that with a properly placed fan. My fan is in the wrong spot. It's on the bottom, instead of halfway up like it should be. I threw this together, and I should have done a much better job. No doubt. Make sure all the surfaces are reflective, whether with flat white paint or Mylar or the panda plastic stuff or what have you. I didn't paint the top of my cabinet, and I think that was bad. I will have to fix it after this grow.
Make sure you have your plant no more than 2-3 inches away from the lights, at ALL times. If you LST, make sure you keep all branches at the same length. If not, it will not grow right. Some branches will be closer to the lights than others, and that is bad. So, same same. All times.
As I have learned here as well, test your pH at least 3 times a wk. Very important. I have learned tons on this grow, so any questions, I will answer them as best as I can. This is my first, but each is a learning experience with lots to learn! The people here at RIU are great, very nice folks. Tons of good info through searching the forums. I ask a lot of questions, no such thing as a stupid question. That's for sure

when you trim leaves. trim before you hang to dry otherwise itll be of greater difficulty when the bud is dry.

also. when it comes to curing burp the bottle once a day for the few days then after the bud becomes dry enough shut the lid on the bottle and put it somewhere for two weeks(minimum, dont forget to take a few buds to hold you over unless you can wait. but the longer the better as im sure you've read) and come back to some nicely manicured bud.

your buds look interesting. nice as well i like the vibrant red hairs.

are you on 12/12? if you're on 12/12(lights) i would cutback to 10/14 - 11/13 (10.5/13.5) this should pump up the crystal production (unless these are autoflower, didnt go through whole thread) but yeh, dont worry your plants will enjoy the dark. then do 72 hours before you chop them down cut the lights, pure darkness the whole time.

But yeah looks good man nice job picking up a constructive, money saving hobby, i hope it greatly distracts you from your alcoholism and i wish you the very best.

hey, john pickle, thanks for the reply! Ok, I will make sure to trim before I dry. So, I assume that I hang the plant to dry before I start the curing/burping process right? I am thinking I am going to hang it my wire inside the cabinet, with the lights off. I will take out the lights, easy enough, just power strips attached to screw heads. Then hang wire from the screws already in place. hang the buds by the stem, and let dry. I guess. I don't know what else to do. I know they are ready for the container once the stem snaps. I read that so far. But I find this harvest stuff confusing and kinda intimidating. I want to do it right lol. As light schedules go, do I need to gradually cut down to 10/14, will it stress the plant if I make the switch in 1 day? I am on 12/12. Been on 12/12 since Oct. 11. Yes, I am some good stuff will help me with my alcoholism. I know I am probably an alkie. I drink basically every night, almost a 5th, sometimes less, sometimes more. The last 2 nights I have slowed down quite a bit, letting my cannabis take over instead. Seems to be working.
assasinofyouth420! sup! Yeah, I kinda did the LST wrong I think. I don't like the way she turned out. I think I should have tied her closer towards the middle of the container. I messed up there. Tied it too much around the outside edge of the container, and it is as wide as the damn cabinet lol. That's not good lol. Not the container! The plant. She's really WIDE lol. So, lesson learned there. And yep, that's speaker wire LOL. Someone gave me a couple rolls of it for free, so I figured, heck would make nice tie wire lol.
I have some pics today. I took some just a bit ago. looking at the pics, if i can explain this, what are those weird button type looking things that are sprouting on the buds? I know it's part of the bud, but does it have a specific name? Im super curious lol.
