hey man, 1 quick one for now.

I'm gettin this ghetty chandelier together for the moms (actually gonna be usin a 2' strip shop light from HD, along with my ghetty chandelier for moms). If you get the time to look, here's what i mean

http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=55326

Anyway, there is an option for the CFL bulbs i'm gettin for it. Where the offer either

You get TWO GROW 6400K, or TWO BLOOM 2700K, or ONE GROW 6400K and ONE BLOOM 2700K bulbs for the widest spectrum suitable for ALL STAGES of PLANT GROWTH!

Should I go for GROW bulbs for both, or should I mix (x1 grow & x bloom) to increase spectrum. Again, these will simply be used for keepin the moms happy.

Thanks for the info. on the autos. I gotta be honest, I am straight jealous as hell bout your lifestyle. However, you do give back quite a bit, so I'm sure you deserve all the good shiz that comes ur way. I mean dang though, 9-5 is fuckin sweet & been doin it EVERYDAY for over a decade now too, cannot tell you how much i would love to be able to be more financially independent & tell those shesiters to take this effin job & shove it. Thanks for the evthing so far my friend!
if its for your moms stick with just the grow bulbs.. it will offer the fullest veg growth you can get...

dont be jealous of me bro.. no reason to be.. im just your average joe.. nothing special... i've learned that if you want it bad enough you'll get it.. you'll get where you want to go if you want to get there bad enough... if you know what im saying.. lol pretty baked right now i must admit.. been smoking my gourd out today..

Thanks for posting all that info! I've grown out doors and have been successful doing so. I'm going to try indoor and find my self up against some issues. I was going to buy a 4x8 tent for the flowering stage using the stickbuddy set up. My problems comes with power. I have 20 amps to work with and and using 2 600 watt lights and everything thing else I'm putting that circut at risk. So, I've been told. My alternative would be to use LEDS but I'm hearing many opinions if they really work. Even though they cost more up front I could 3 or 4 of them in the tent to increase the the light and still use less power. Any thoughts?
alright... first dont waste the money on the leds... you'll be very dissapointed in the end.. although they may have "as much usable light" they dont have near the power or penetration you will want/need for high quality flowers...

my question to begin things with is can you install another breaker and run a second 20 amp line to wherever your tent would be to allow for everything you need?? that would be the easiest (assuming you can do electrical or know someone who can descritely help you out) thing to do and offer plenty of extra power so you have no risk of running to high...

my second suggestion would be these.... http://www.brandys-imports.com/susaivgr.html they are sunleaves satellite IV floros... now there are similar floros out there that people may try to compare these to.. but let me explain what these are...

first off they DO NOT use t5s, t8s, or t12s... they use tt-105 bulbs... each single bulb is 105ws and puts off 11,000 lumens.. each ballast holds 4 bulbs.. so each ballast is 420w and puts of 44,000 lumens.... pretty impresive in and of itself.. but it gets better...

their running temp is ultra low.. max of 95f... this means you need less in the way of exhaust to keep temps in check... even better is the fact that your plants actually get more than 44,000 lumens from them.. ill explain..

lumen ratings are based at 1 foot from the light source.. so that means 1 foot from the actual ballast is where the 44,000 lumens is rated from.. you can actually keep these ballasts within an inch (i keep mine less) from your plant.. that means well over the 44,000 lumens.. and they penetrate very well...

they come with either grow or bloom bulbs.. but i would suggest just getting the bloom bulbs... they are (i think) 4200k.. which isnt as low a kelvin rating as an hps... but they still flower fucking amazing... and you'll be MORE than happy with them...

now the reason i show you those is i think they would be perfect for your setup.. if you put them in 2 parallel rows they would cover almost every inch of the entire tent perfectly.. and again the lower heat issue plus the ability to keep them so close to your plants is great...

also the 44000 lumens is the mean lumen rating... HID bulbs have a start up lumen and a mean lumen rating.. typically the ones they show us are the start up or "peak" lumen rating... they usually lose something like 15% of that after 5 minutes or something.. the floros will give you a constant 44000 lumens as long as all 4 bulbs work... i have had mine for almost 2 years and havent had any bulbs burn out on my yet!!

they are a little pricey for floros.. but they should be for what they deliver... since you mentioned LEDs its obvious you are willing to drop the money for the right stuff.. and i truely truely believe that these will do what you want...

i was going to upload some pics from my last harvest but ill just link you to a post with some pics https://www.rollitup.org/general-marijuana-growing/265065-harvest-pics.html those are from under the floros flowering.. you can also check the youtube vid in my link to see what they can produce during veg...

point of all of this is if you had 4 of them that would be less than 1700 watts.. which is just over 14 amps.. that means you should still have enough space for pumps and fans and be ok.. its still pushing it.. but its better than where you'd be at the other way... you may still have to pull power from another circuit for a little bit of stuff tho..

Thank SimpsonSam I was kinda of leaning towards your advice and just gett another enhanced 600wHPS bulb and just supplement with some t-5 side lights which I already was going to do,heat shouldnt be a prob, but we will see very shortly Thanks that was the way I wanted to go but it's still nice to hear confirmation from someone that's more knowledgeable than I am about this. I will post some pics next week everything should be arrived and Ill finally be able to get truly started, just the gun three times just being impatient and setting everything up before I was Truly ready, and im making myself wait, which is making me even more neurotic. anyway
Thanx again,

hey man, here's where my little dwarf ladies are lookin like. Take a peak & lemme know what ya think.

And there are a few more of those yellow spots left on one of the plants. I kicked up the Micro Boost and added some Magical, which helped a bit, but it's weird, bout 4 of 'em have at least a few of the spots, but they tend to be the larger of the crew. Who knows? I don't suppose those spots will affect yield or anything do ya?

I'll keep the calciaum up a bit. I'm bout 1-200 in the PPM shit. Says supposed to be @ round 1150, and I'm around 1300 after adding extra boost & magical, so i feelin that i'm alright, but lemme know if i tweak anything different.

Long Time No See Guys! :P
Just about finished setting my tent up, and I had a quick question. I got one of those purple digital ballasts and I am wondering if anyone thinks it could get too hot to put on top of the tent. Also: I have a yield master II supreme with a hortilux super 400w hps with the glass and some venting on each side going out of the tent. Until I get a vent fan to suck/blow air through the reflector hood, would I be better off removing the glass to keep the bulb cool? Or do hps run cool enough to keep enclosed with virtually no air flow?

I'm guessing the answer to both is no, and I should take the glass off, t hen raise the hood, and add a fan that blows somewhere at the bulb.
PS: 12 inches above plants for an hps is pretty standard yes? With glass can it get much below that? I've seen that one chart but it dosen't mention if glass is used or not (says no closer than 6 inches)

PSS: Sop tomorrow is a scheduled watering day without nutes, and i will be able to move them into bigger pots and give them the hps. Is there any problem with watering them at 6 in the morning when their lights come on, transplanting to bigger pots, and sticking them in the big tent with their first day of 400w super hps in a grow tent? How bad would it be if i did that and switched to 12/12 all in the same day?

I'm not sure how much longer I will veg, they are looking their best ever now and with a calculated average height of 8 inches (one is tall, medium, small with about the same difference between each) the pots I got are as tall as a gallon jug of milk with the lid top cut off and can fit a gallon jug of milk in them with about an inch of room on each side.. Haha square pots about 9 inches across and about 7 inches deep. So yeah how long do you think i can afford to veg in these pots before I will ultimately have to get bigger ones down the line? With pots this size should I switch to flowering soon so they don't outgrow these pots too? *I don't really want to get even bigger pots but I will if I have to

PSS: So I might just move them into their tent now with the hps, haven't test run it yet but will any minute now. Question: Do marijuana plants experience any shock when switching types of light? I will be going from 4 24w 6500k bulbs a a few inches above them, to a 400w hortilux super hps about a foot above them, will that stress them out at all?

PSSS: also, it may make sense, but it seems pretty strange that neither my reflector nor my ballast have an on/off switch (the only way to turn it off appears to be to unplug the 120v line of the ballast from the regular wall socket it plugs into) - thoughts?

Hey bro, gonna grab some type of bubble bags & try them out. Do you think it is worth it foe the autos, or does the ruderalis make it not worth fukin with, and just wait & use for other reg photo girls?

as always, thank ya thank ya

if you have a chance to get things set up and give it a test run to check heat and everything prior to adding the plants you'll be way ahead of the curve if there are any issues.. it will give you time to fix/adjust things without having your plants suffer... good luck on everything tho and i cant wait to see pics of how things are going for you!

hey bro im new to growing and u sound like you know your stuff so just to ask and exp grower to an un exp grower that im ussing a 55gallon rubbermaid tote and these plants look ok one is an LST and the othere was just straight up growing but i think it got to much heat to it and it almost died so i trimmed the dead leavs now shes comming bak so i was wondering about watering i always have trouble watering either to much or to little its so frustrating idfk what to do bro ne advice?
hey bro.. ill be happy to help you out...

first make sure you have adequate drain holes at the bottom of your tote... there can be a lot of water that gets trapped in there during watering so you want to make sure it has an out...

the easiest way to tell if you need to water is to purchase a 10 or 15 dollar moisture meter and use it... they are usually 12 inches long.. so you can get to the middle of the pot.. dont worry if it hits the roots some.. they wont mind as long as you are somewhat gentle...

as for the actual watering here is the best way to do it with the size of container you are working with...

start out by breaking up the top inch or 2 of soil across the top.. this will help the water penetrate through the soil... especially make sure you do this around the edges of the tote... water is likely to just run off around there...

when you get your solution mix or plain water ready add a couple drops of non-scented biodegradable liquid dish soap.. i think dawn (the original blue stuff) is what i used... just make sure its non scented and biodegradable... this will again help the water penetrate...

when you water (assuming you are using a 1 gallon water can??) water with about 1/2 of the gallon.. wait a few minutes and allow that water to be absorbed throughout the soil... then water with 1/4 of the remaining.. again waiting for a few minutes (say 10 minutes each waiting period)... then the other 1/4 can....

if you need to use a second gallon just keep repeating with the 1/4 gallon amount.... do this until you begin to see water running from the drain holes.. once you see that you know you are good to go...

so a moisture meter + the rest of the advice should = a perfect watering each time...

also.. remember that there is not perfect amount of time between watering.. your plant will use more water sometimes.. less water sometimes... it may take 7 days between 1 watering and only 3 between the next.. using a meter will take the guessing game out of it...

out of curiosity, what kind of soil/amendments are you using?? nutes?? and why do you think that the temps were too high beside the plant almost dieing?? what were the temps??

hey man, here's where my little dwarf ladies are lookin like. Take a peak & lemme know what ya think.

they look good bro.. really nice and healthy.. congrats!!

can you take a pic of the yellow spots?? from what you have said i would just assume its from excelerated growth rates.. nothing to be concerned with.. especially if it is just on a few of the larger ones.. makes sense.. sometimes they can grow faster than they rate at which they use nutes.. this can cause minor defs in the plants.. you did perfect uping the ppm and magical tho...

everything else sounds good... ppms are good... plants are good.. i can see budsites wanting to start to show.. so anytime soon you'll be making the switch to bloom nutes.. keep it up bro.. you should be very happy...

hey brotha.. glad to hear your making progress too... congrats...

so the ballast shouldnt get hot enough that it cant be on the tent.. i have mine sitting ontop of some poly and they dont melt it.. especially being a 400.. it will stay plenty cool...

using a ballast with the glass is the best way to go... you really should have an exhaust fan set up tho to help.. but i can tell you know that... as for the question, i would personally leave the glass and just sit a fan up to blow hot air away from the reflector... think of a 1000w hps in an outdoor light.. they are enclosed and put off a shit load more heat... with just the outside to cool it off.. its for the most part the same idea as you are going to do.. just a smaller bulb for you to worry about heat.. if it seems to get to hot you can always remove the lense and attempt to cool.. you may want to try both ways and see what works best...

12" is a good height amount.. when they are younger (Seedlings) i would go more like 18 to 20 inches to be safe.. but once they are in good veg you can move that a lot closer...

you can do everything you want (switch pots and to 12/12 under new light) all in the same day fine.. if you are careful with the transplant it should cause little shock.. the light may shock them a little... just from the increase.. but nothing to worry about.. 12/12 switching can always somewhat shock plants.. but its again nothing to worry about.. i would hit them with light nutes when you water if you do transplant...

as long as you stay up on watering and feeding them you can run the entire rest of the grow in the pots you are talking about above.. you just may have to water more frequently than if they were in even larger pots.. but i'd say you could veg a few more weeks if you wanted to.. but i think starting to flower sooner than later would be a better idea so you can get the most out of your light...

again light can shock them.. but usually its because its too intense put to close.. if you give them an adjustment time with it backed off a little and increase the closeness over a couple days they will be more than fine...

yeah.. they dont have switches.. kinda stupid.. but un plug when you want off... plug in when you want on.. or better yet get a timer to do it for you.. lol

i think that covered everything.. :)

Hey bro, gonna grab some type of bubble bags & try them out. Do you think it is worth it foe the autos, or does the ruderalis make it not worth fukin with, and just wait & use for other reg photo girls?

as always, thank ya thank ya

honestly... i dont like bubble bags.... making bubble hash is a pain in the ass.. and some of the bags are far too fine to actually use... when i make hash i just use a hash box similar to this http://www.bcboxes.com/ it just makes dry keif that you have to press or use as is... but it seems to yield a lot more in the end.. plus is much easier.. plus when you are done removing the keif, you can use the trimmings left over to make butter/oil for cookies and shit... just works better for me i guess...

if you REALLY want to try bubble bags and bubble hash then i encourage you to do so.. the more ways you can try shit the more you'll know what your style is in the end..

Ok so I think what I will do is water and transplant today, and then get them under the hps at 12inches. My air scrubber thing should arrive today but is not here yet, so in order to have decent circulation i must have the doors open to the tent (with an oscillating fan blowing air in/around/on the plants). Is it not safe to have that in the same room behind me? Do 400w hps bulbs put off enough uv rays or anything to harm me if I am sitting across the bedroom for most of the day?

Presently I am rigging a like 17 year old computer to run an extra computer fan I bought recently so it can blow into the reflector venting or maybe suck air out of the venting (if i can find a way to do that better). I don't have any money to buy a new fan for the reflector, and I won't for a couple weeks, so hopefully this will do...

Oh yes, so do you think a 130cfm fan at the top of the tent pulling air out would be enough to adequately cool the 400w hps in the reflector if I removed the venting but not the glass?

Ok so just got done transplanting (WOW way more roots after using superthrive!) and watering and getting under the hps for the first time. the reflector is hung about 1/2 way up the tent with out venting going up and out the top, and the in venting coming up from the bottom. I have the computer fan running off an old computer and blowing air into the in venting (figured that would be more efficient without any air-tighting*haha, plus heat rises). I also have the oscillating fan blowing air into the tent and over the ballast and at the computer fan for the reflector. Waiting for the carbon filter thing to come today, here is a pic of them all!

PS: Again I say: Boy a 400w 55000 lumen HPS bulb sure dosen't seem very bright! (is that normal?) 98w of cfl / around 6000 lumens vs 55,000 lumens of 400w hps (cfls seem way brighter!) Or is that just because one is more white and the other is orange?

it sounds like its just a mutation if everything you said is fine.. it could have been caused by the high ph and is just showing late.. but it sounds like its fine and is just a mutation.. leaves can do all sorts of weird shit..

what is the ideal temp in the grow room? and what is usually too hot?
in the mid 70's ideally... above 85f (without co2 and plenty of ventilation) is too hot.... below 60 is to cool...

can sum 1 tell me what hieghth my plant should b or how old b4 flower stage?
there is no height or magic age to start flowering... its a personal choice pretty much.. here are some guide lines to use when deciding tho..

1) your plant will likely double in height, possibly triple (the more sativa in it the more stretch) in height during flowering.. so a 1 foot plant could end up anywhere from 2 to 3 feet tall... so use that as a space guide line...

2) lights can only penetrate so far... a 400w HID can get 1 foot of penetration... 600w is about 2 feet... and a 1000w can get about 3 ft... it makes no sense, and is a waste of light, to have a 4 ft tall plant with a 400w light.. so use your lights also in the decision... grow within their abilities...

3) maturation is only acheived after a good veg time... this can be in the 4 to 6 week range... once you see preflowers or alternating nodes you can be sure your plant has reached its full maturity... this means it will flower at its peak performance... also a good time to flower... if your plant isnt fully mature, thats ok too.. it will still flower and produce good quality buds (based on the quality of the seeds of course) but will not be 100% of what it could be if completely matured...

those 3 factors should come into play when deciding when to flower.. but you can start as early as 12/12 from seed... so when ever you want to flower is more than fine...

youll be fine around the hps.. you wont get cancer or anything like that.. lol

any air you can remove is that much less heat around the tent and light... it may not work great.. but itll be a start until you can get a real fan...

if you can set things up to have the fan pull air out you are much better off.. if there are leaks in the duct the air pushing through will blow out of the leaks.. if it is pulling those leaks become more exhaust holes for hot air to be pulled into.. if that makes sense.... but that wont really matter much until you get a large fan.. (i would suggest around a 300cfm fan)

lumens dont matter with light brightness... the oranges in the hps will make it look much less bright than it really is.. the more white/daylight the bulb is the brighter it will appear to be.. so yea, comparatively the hps doesnt look near as bright.. but the brightness doesnt mean much.. its the "light pressure" the lamp puts off that matters...

if your spraying it with a foliar spray that could be the cause... can you take a pic?? that would help a lot...

hello im super new here, i was wondering what is the best soil or mix for an indoor grow?
70% soil and 30% perlite or other additives (such as peet moss, vermiculite, hydroton)

use good soil that does not have any added nutrients.. worm castings are good to have in the soil mix also...

stay away from straight miracle grow soil... or other soils with time released nutes...

they look great bro.. very nice.. :bongsmilie:

here is my suggestion for plant height... super crop... super crop the shit out of them throughout veg.. you'll get short and bushier plants.. and many many tops that will end up as fat as the center cola... not that what you are doing is bad at all.. but super cropping will stunt vertical growth more than FIM'ing will and will also give you much stronger and thicker branches all around... if you do want to LST instead tho you may want to start soon.. the more you can do in veg the better off the flowering will go..

as for ph, is your problem going up or going down?
Hey bro. Ditto on the appreciative comments you have been getting. Will be doing the supercropping for sure. So in my second soil grow I'm continuing to make mistakes, but definately learning from them and getting better. Regarding soil, as a newbie I was determined to make the ultimate perfect recipie. Bought mirracle grow potting soil, added perlite, vermiculite and sand. But pH was always high and the solution I tried screwed it up worse. Wanted dolomitic lime but couldn't find in stores. So tried gypsum with various sulpher compounds in it. This turned the mix into freeking mud that didn't drain and made plants sickly and stunted with no root development. I also experimented with adding bat guano but put in too much and burned the hell out of them. So here's what I learned and want to share with our friends. JUST BUY THE FUCKING FOXFARM SOIL!!! Considering that it is already pH balanced and has guano along with worm casing already perfectly mixed, it's actually the best buy! The only thing I add is about fifty percent rough sand (sterile horticultural). No added perlite. It alteady has some. And this might sound counter to what I've read, but I want my soil to drain and dry out FAST - like in a couple days not four or more. Because I want more cycles of roots drying out and letting those little root hairs thrive! So what do you think bro? I've been getting much better growth this way. I have other questions but will try to stick with one topic at a time. Thanks as always!

Do you have any good fans you can recommend for the reflector/light? My air filter thingy is supposedly 48 dBA and I know that kind of thing is hard to calculate, but its like a loud gaming computer and its only 130cfm. Are there any high powered fans I could use for the venting that wouldn't be much louder? Any difference between squirrel cage fans, inline fans, can fans, etc. in your experience? I don't know much about any of these things yet.

I just read someone say that inline fans are only boosters so they aren't as powerful, but are far more quiet.*
This is a good I think, someone was raving about it on another site, supposed to be super quiet and not much less than 300cfm http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Building-Products/Ventilation-Systems/Inline-Fans/model.FV-20NLF1.S_11002_7000000000000005702#tabsection
