I'm surprised you've never seen those used before now. They're used in almost all cheap Amazon hydro systems for things like fill level tubes especially.
Honestly, they look like the grommets I'd document used in holes drilled in steel boxes for the purposes of protecting low-voltage electrical cabling.
I never envisioned that type of grommet used to protect against water leakage in a hydro system
That said, building a hydro system (RDWC) is something I've always thought about (and have base plans for), but that's not for at least a year yet.
Personally, at the base of a system like this, I'd want far larger than 1/2 to 3/4" returns, but I digress.

Well, I feel like I need to clear this up. But the grommets used in electrical work are symmetrical and rounded on both sides. While they MIGHT work, the ones that are used and made for hydro, are called "Donut Grommets" and have a rounded side and a tapered side. It is not symmetrical. Again, I highly suggest using 2" returns at the least. A lot of folks even use 3" which is about as big as you could ever need to go.
