How do you keep the h2o you add to make the slurry from having effect on the reading?I've effectively used the same meter for soil. Just need to make a slurry.

Don't worry about ph too much if at all, since you're growing in soil medium, and because the FF liquid lineup also self-buffers to a good range if mixed properly. Careful adding nutes to the already "hot" FF soil mixes you bought! The more important meter to initially have will be a conductivity meter for tracking strength/salinity of your water/nute mixes. Useful until you get a feel for the mix ratios you want to use. If mixed properly, ph will always be around 6-6.5, and if you water properly (slowly soak pots everytime you water, with some runoff) the soil ph will be perfect. Get the GH ph test kit with water sample vial and the test drops bottle. Simple, cheap, accurate, long lasting supply in a single bottle. The test strips are not as reliable in my experience.

Also, you will want a humidifier with a built in hydrostat, and a space heater or AC to control temps, depending on your location/conditions of course.
Exactly the meters I started with. I upgraded to a BlueLab pH pen, but I'm still using my TDS pen years later. They are inexpensive and decent quality,I concur re: the 2-probe style pH "meter." It'll tell you if your soil is soaked, but that's about it. I went through 2 of them before accepting the fact that they're just a toy.
I'm a cheap bastard, and I've found some of the cheap PPM and pH meters do fine. Just calibrate the pH against a pH 4.01 standard solution and it's sufficiently accurate that these are what I use for my hydro runs and they work well. Your choice..

I've read that, about Ocean Harvest. Its PH is a bit high, naturally.I see you mentioned clear plastic cups, I have seen quite a few good growers recommending against using the clear cups unless using a second cup outside.
Roots don't like light. Some guys use the clear cups and place them inside the red or blue cups for this reason.
Also to add, I am 7/7 with germinating and starting seeds in FFOF , I have seen so many people rag on it for being too hot, I have not seen those issues yet. Personally I think it's great lol
Small sample size tho
Its PH is a bit high
