Growing Orchids

Sounds like our climates are quite different. You get as much precip in a month as we get all year. I worked at a nursery. I killed a few in my days...still do. Sometimes the climate just doesn't work.

Don't know about varieties of jujube or if there are...but, when mine bloom [not a showy bloom at all, kind of like a mango or lychee bloom. Clusters of tiny blossoms] they smell like lime jello. I'd send you some, if I could. My soil isn't very deep to say the least....I could only drive a ground rod 4ft and it stopped. So, my trees are popping up all over from the roots.

Hi Kitty,
If you get there, see if they have honohono's. My grower friend did them in HI....Too bad I don't have a clue to the scientific name or variety. They tend toward a fleshy hanging stem and flowers. Did a google image search...guess what? honohono is the variety. And for some reason I can't get the image to come up from the url??? I'll give another try...
eureka!!

My phal is coming along, but still "stretching". Looks to be going for a good show. The dendrobs are adjusting to some rearranging. They were not happy with the way things were. I got them some more sun.
This bloody house is like a cave. I was telling the Mrs. I could fix that with some lights, but it would be cheaper to get a couple of windows in the right places....I have a plan

I have a couple orchids in peat moss that I am trying to get to flower. I read that you have to give them a temperature drop to induce flowering. I put them out in the garage to try to form flowers. It is dark out in the garage though most of the time other then ambient light from a growbox. They have been out there about a week and I have not seen any changes yet. Will my orchids need a light cycle in order for flowering to be induced?

what variety?
the phals need a temp drop. Don't now how long for...anyone?
Mine gets it w/o trying...the fireplace doesn't reach that far. My dendrobs don't seem to need the temp drop...they want sun in the winter.

sledgehammer....I like your style. ...and I do have a hammer for every size job.
but sorry. As they say..."Been there, done that". I cut an 8 X 25 travel trailer out of here. And another that got built into a shed. You should see the pile of bright polished aluminum [aluminium for some] I have from the sheathing. Got all kinds of ideas for it. From reflectors to some almighty splashbacks and range hood in the kitchen.

I haven't tried a cym for a long time...30+yrs. I haven't got any advice or help with 'em. It suffered a long lingering death.

regards,
Azoned

Nothin flash...MG Liquid Houseplant Food at 20 drops/gal, every watering. Mist the foliage, too. Same mix. Was recommended by a grower in HI. According to her,"Most orchid food has to much N, this is more balanced."

There was a care and maintenence guide for Orchids in a just passed issue of Fine Gardening. I'm sure I can get permission to reprint it if anyone wants it. I learned a few things. Like the temp differencial. (sp?) should be like 15-20 degrees . I forgot most of those tips cause I have NO memory any more.
But I do rem the name of the mag...LOL

ok.... so the phal is definitely fading......

would this be a good time to stick it outside for the temperature differencial? maybe try for a late spring spike? nighttime lows are above-freezing now.

Hi Kitty,
I dunno. I've never tried for a 2nd....Mine takes all winter to set bloom and when it fades, it's too warm [inside or out] to trigger it again.

Azoned

We should try to get an orchids only section added to rui. Orchids are amazing flowers, they take skill to grow, and they keep you working just like marijuana. Whos with me?
