Chapter 9: The Pheno Hunt
Day93
Day 72 of 12/12

Things are coming to an end. I began chopping a plant here and a plant there on Saturday and I'm left with about half of the plants. A few of them could certainly go another week but I think it's fine.

On Day 70, I graded all of the plants. They all got either an A, B, C or D. The few that would have gotten an F were already killed.
I've decided that my selection process can only include plants from the A and B category. I'll still send all of the samples to my reviewers, but if anything from C or D scores exceptional, I will not consider it. My grading scale focuses mostly on flower development and shape, sensitivities to nutrients and general overall plant health. I'm just not interested in keeping some sickly odd looking plant just because it reviews exceptionally well. I'll keep sifting, thank you.

Here's the breakdown: (Keep in mind, finding a Chem keeper is top priority.)

Chem:
(3) Scored an A
(3) Scored a B
(1) Scored a C
(2) Scored a D

Appalachian Super Skunk:
(2) Scored an A
(1) Scored a B
(1) Scored a C

Goji OG F2:
(2) Scored an A
(2) Scored a B
(2) Scored a C
(1) Scored a D

It's going to take a long time before I get the reviews back ~ 3 1/2 months I estimate.
I figure 2 weeks of hang dry, 2 weeks of pre-cure, 6 weeks of cure. That puts me at 10 weeks before I can even ship samples. 4 weeks minimum after that to get all of the results in.

So...here is the plan. If you recall, I bought a fridge dedicated to clones. I've been holding clones of all of these in cold storage since the end of January. I'm going to pull out 2 clones from each plant and try and get them going. Having never stored clones this way, I don't know if it's going to work. So I'm going to keep all of the plants from groups A and B and attempt to reveg them, in the event the clones don't work.

In the meantime, I've started seeds for Chapter 10 which consists of only 2 varieties:
Mountain Temple from Bodhi and Green Crack. I never got the old school Mass seeds I was promised - oh well, move on.
By the time reviews come back, I'll hopefully have living plants in veg to select from based on the reviews.

The plants I've already chopped were the ones that were clearly done. The pictures tonight are what is left. They range from mostly done to almost done.

Day 100 (12/12 from seed)

Thanksgiving is approaching! I was hoping these girls would be done by Thursday but it's not looking promising. Not that I am in a time crunch or anything, but they sure are stinky and if the RH in the room gets above 54% or 55%, the carbon filter just can't do it's job well enough.

@Dr.Amber Trichome - Here is the photo box. It's super simple. Rather crude. But cheap and easy. Some foam boards from Hobby Lobby. The have tons of sizes - I went with 20" x 30". Taped together a 3 sided box. No bottom and the roof is a separate piece. This makes it foldable and super easy to move around and store. It's not perfect and it has seams but for a cheap 1st attempt, it's not bad.

Next up is a few group shots. It's pretty neat to see some exhibiting the nice fall colors yet others look like they are being flushed, which of course, I do not do.

And finally, some full plant shots. No particular order.

It's tough to put a number on days of flowering when you run 12/12 from seed. In my experience, a decent estimate is day 1 of flower starts on day 28. This can be lower as well as much higher but it's a decent frame of reference. This would put these at day 72 of flowering. Seems close to me. My typical flowering time seems to be anywhere from 65 to 85 days with most falling in between 70 and 75 days. I was fully expecting to have a list of plants I was going to start chopping tomorrow but I don't. I don't think anything is ready yet.

Awesome build. I started back last year with one of those. Worked well. Min mas laced with a mylar space blanket, and 3mil garbage bag on the outside lol nice looking buds!

That box is really cool . What light are you using for it . I would play around with some bright color construction paper on the inside of the box . First up bright Pink. I don’t remember why you don’t flush ? They look ready to me. What are you waiting for?

This is the light and I love it. I use it for taking pics, for inspecting plants and also a general shop light...lol

Regarding flushing, I never really believed in the premise. And years later, science pretty much proved me correct. I could harvest now and it would be fine. But they really can go longer to truly be finished. I'll be doing a close inspection tonight and another Wednesday night.

Inspecting Trichomes? Can you get some Trichome picture . That would be so cool!

Day 102 (12/12 from seed)

The 1st 5 plants were harvested last Saturday, 9 days ago. The full plant hang dry is going perfectly. I increased the RH a bit and I have them swinging between 61F/63% and 63F/60%. Over the last few days I removed the largest fan leaves. They will remain in this environment for 3 more days and then I'll move to step 2. More on that when it begins.

No other plants have been harvested since the 1st 5. Many of the remaining plants are close, but not quite there. A significant percentage of the plants are foxtailing which is not what I want. That said, this review cycle is more about the quality of effect and the terp profile and less about appearance.

Only 1 plant to showcase tonight. I was going to do 5 but then ended up taking 30 pics of this one plant. This is one of my favorites. It's not the biggest. It's not the fattest. It's not the most resinous. But it's close to perfection, from a growers vantage point.

I present sample 2-16.

Day 103 (12/12 from seed)

We have a plant coming down tomorrow morning. This is the gnarliest plant in the bunch, by far. Can you say corn rolls? Further down on the plant, we even have corn rolls that are fox-tailing. I'm rooting for this plant to review poorly just because I hate the appearance. What do you guys think? Is this desirable? Do you hate it? Does it not matter? The only positive thing I can come up with with corn rolls like this is that each little section of the roll fits nicely in a one-hitter.

I know what you mean. I don’t really like foxtailing on my plants at all. It’s a freak you have that’s for sure. It’s interesting looking .I would like to see what it looks like when it’s dry. In the end what counts how well it hits so she could be the best one of the pack but I doubt it.

Day 104 (12/12 from seed)

2 more plants are coming down tomorrow morning. I shot a 3rd plant which won't be coming down for a few more days...just wanted to showcase her as she is one of my favorites.

Sample 2-13
This one is a bit of an outlier. It does not have the deep red from the Chem 9. The structure is somewhat in between what the others look like.
I am rooting for this one to review well.
2-13-A.jpg
2-13-B.jpg

Sample 2-5
This one has been one of my favorites for at least a month. It won't be coming down for another 3 or 4 days, probably. The top is starting to foxtail just a bit which stinks but it's still pretty good.
2-5-A.jpg
2-5-B.jpg

Sample 2-16
I did not shoot this plant tonight but only because I took tons of pictures of her 2 days ago. She's a rockstar. She is coming down tomorrow. Here is the last picture I took of her - 2 days ago.
2-16-B.jpg
2-16-C.jpg

Looking like I am going to try and pick 2 plants a day and try and wrap up in about a week. I really need to get room #1 cleaned and prepped for these clones. They are getting too big for room #2.

Day 108 (12/12 from seed)

4 more plants are ready to take down tomorrow morning. Right before I took these pictures, I removed a few fan leaves and some smaller leaves here and there so I could get a better look. These were the first leaves I've ever removed...from any of them.

Sample 2-2
This was one of my favorites about a month ago. Then it started to foxtail and get weird. You'll notice there are quite a few white hairs. Almost all of these appeared within the last 3 days. The foxtails on this one shot up and then threw out fresh pistils. I suppose I could let her keep going, but fuck, this is ~ day 78 of flowering for her.
2-2-A.jpg
2-2-B.jpg

Sample 2-5
I've showcased this one a few times. It's the shortest but most fully formed single plant cola without foxtails out of the bunch. It's been one of my favorites for a long time and still is.
2-5-A.jpg
2-5-B.jpg

Sample 2-17
Similar to 2-5. This one has a lot more yellowing of the smaller interior leaves. Not quite as pretty but not much foxtailing and definitely no slouch.
2-17-A.jpg
2-17-B.jpg

Sample 5-3
This one is very similar to 2-2. They might not look it now, but most of the grow they were.

Day 111 (12/12 from seed)

Hey everyone. Last night I discovered some mold inside one of the plants I was staging to harvest this morning. Upon further inspection, I found 2 more. And today I found 2 more. I've continued to take pics as I need to document everything well but I'm pretty upset and not in the right head space to post any proper updates. Give me a few days to shake it off and I'll catch up.

I think I need to take a break for a bit. Some changes in my room design are probably in order. It's really frustrating to work at this as hard as I do to have this happen. This really took the wind out of my sails...that's really all I can say for now.

Sorry to hear it dude, gutted this summer myself, still reeling. Things will get better and I wish you the very best.

It's been a day and I've calmed down and gotten over my sour mood. The last plant came down this morning and I did photo shoot everything so pics will be coming soon. If anyone has an opinion, please feel free to share. But this is what I think:

1) My growing skills have continued to improve and hopefully this will continue. One of my primary goals from day 1 has been to cultivate small un-topped plants that can produce a near whole-plant cola. I think it is highly probable that colas the width of 2 liter bottles will simply carry the risk of mold.

2) I've never once had mold until I built this room. I began breaking things down today so I could do a thorough clean and really take a close look at things. For example, the plastic garage tiles that sit on top of the tables have never been removed. Until today, I was not even sure if I would be able to remove them as the tackiness of the blue max is unreal. I've also never inspected or cleaned the six drain water collection totes underneath the tables. As the disassemble began, it became clear that I have a serious sanitation problem. The totes underneath the tables were beyond foul. I expected a large amount of coco sludge to be in there, but to my surprise, there really wasn't. But it was nasty as hell, none the less. Moldy? Didn't look like it but I cant say for certain. The tables themselves were also pretty gross. I'm going to take some pictures tomorrow because there are some areas that look like it's possible mold was growing. Maybe you can tell?

3) Air replacement. I think my 6 inch fan and carbon filter are dreadfully undersized. I think a beefy 8 inch is in order.

4) Air movement and air quality. I'm not so sure I have a problem in this area but I will be thinking about it.

These are the topics I think I need to address. Feel free to chime in if you have any thoughts....it's much appreciated.

All in all, this round still went really well. 5 of the 20 molded. I was still able to collect usable samples from the 5. I threw away about 5 gallons of stunning cannabis. Makes me sick to my stomach just saying that...lol

The drying process is going very well. I'm a bit at the mercy of the weather where I live but I have the drying room pretty stable at 63 degrees F and 62% RH. The 1st 5 plants were harvested around 19 days ago and they hung for 12 days, pizza boxes for between 3 and 7 days and the jarring is almost done. I think 12 days of hang was not quite enough so I'm going to be targeting 14 days for the next round. I've been trimming a little here and there as they hang.

:hug:Please don’t be so hard on yourself. You did so great! No one is perfect. I have had to get rid of plants because of powdery mildew , mold and other personal issues and they were all heartbreaking. Now I have matured enough to realize that at the end of the day, they are only plants and it’s a part of challenges we sign up for when we get involved .

Thanks, Doc.
It wasn't a total disaster. The last of them are being jarred tonight. All in all, a total of 8 were found with mold. 2 really bad, 2 moderately bad, and 4 were that were pretty minor. I was able to collect usable and clean sample from 7 of the 8 so the review process will continue as planned. I've already been making modifications to the room, which I will share soon.
