How Do You Sativa People Do It In A 4X4?

…But you communicated in one paragraph what I've spent the last 40 years trying to do, and the last couple of months trying to explain to readers here on RIU, with absolutely no success.
Late to the party, but I agree with you. That was very well written.

It’s a bit amusing (and frustrating, and kinda sad) reading posts from people who have zero experience with any kind of basic gardening, and couldn’t tell a cola from a cotyledon.

There are so many new folks who are eager to grow, and I admire their enthusiasm.

Obviously, not all of us have an agricultural or horticultural background, nor are we all Master Gardeners. Everybody has to start somewhere, and you don’t know what you don’t know.

I enjoy teaching because it’s genuinely rewarding being able to teach and help someone learn.

Agreed the site has some real green newbs, but they don't want to listen at all, which is weird to me.

For example I just read a post where a guy says " I don't worry about nanners, I just look out for balls and pollen." Jeeeeesssusssssss

The lack of knowledge of even the very beginning basics is astounding to me. Then when I try to help four jaspers jump in and contradict every word, like it's cool to be stupid lol.

Back to topic, sativas in a small space can be controlled by training obviously, starting seeds or clones on 12/12, being kept in small pots, a good phosphoload at the switch to flower, netting to encourage horizontal growth etc..

This is a rainbow haze I have going now... There's only about 65"s of room because of the window ac unit up top... I messed around and let her veg too long... In desperation I attempted to turn each of her 4 stalks into a set of stairs... It's worked out pretty well... I have had to tie her to the corners to stretch her out laterally... Not the prettiest... Frankensteinian in a way... But she's sticky and happyIMG_20230119_223435492.jpgIMG_20230119_223305710.jpgIMG_20230119_223254478.jpgIMG_20230119_223301256.jpgIMG_20230119_223231315.jpgIMG_20230119_223243909.jpgIMG_20230119_223218595.jpgIMG_20230119_223223339.jpg

looking at your plants brings me physical pain. thats maximum stress training. Your plant looks like Evil Knivel.
I really didn't mean to let her get that big... Because of the AC up top I needed to put some air holes and a light box in the door if I wanted to be able to close the door... I am a master procrastinator... The plant didn't get the memo and kept growing while I was putting things off... When I really started paying attention she was 3"s from the light and in the stretch... Desperate measures for desperate times my friend!

Let me guess, you recline the seats, right? :p

First off, I'm not requesting assistance and don't need advice, the title is rhetorical. I've grown 97 Sensi's Jack Herer in a 2X5 closet and had to LST the shit out of them to keep 'em from hitting the 1 kw M/H Sunmaster Warm Deluxe, but it's been a very long time.

Since 2000, I have grown nothing but Northern Lights/SouthEast Lights, which are Type IV/Hybrids that are almost universally Christmas tree structured. Now that I've isolated the Type I/Sativa parental unit, I've been working a few plants. These are far from the Thai/Hawaiian originals, obviously, but these are damn tall plants. Can't put the lights any higher and two of the plants are 4" above the light getting ready to hit the tent ceiling:

My concern is yield. Without the usual large, dense colas NL/SEL produce, these buds just don't seem like they're going to produce enough useable cannabis. That's not a problem at all, as my wife and I have more than we will consume the next year or two.

But it got me wondering, do you sativa growers produce enough from a 4X4 to sustain you from one harvest to the next?
i tie them down. then tie them down. then tie them down...
i have had to squeeze some uncooperative branches hard enough to be able to point them down. our beloved plants will just keep on living. worst case, i'd top the shit out of them. you'll still get the sativa you want. just not a truck full.

that must be some genetic. i can't imagine growing the same thing for more than a couple years. always something new to taste and enjoy but, if i found the perfect high, i'd be stupid to not always have a place for it.

variety is the spice of my weed loving life.

This grow I'm going with a more traditional approach ;)

I top above the fifth node and as the lower branches grow I tie them down to grow horizontally until the plant is 20" wide.

About half way there I cut off the first and second nodes.

Then I flip to flower.

These plants (in an expandable 4 x4) are 20" wide and roughly 20" high. Second day of 12/12.

All new to me strains, if I get a 2x stretch they will still be under 4'......

I'm dealing with my Filipino Kibungan Sativa Landrace right now. She's being very aggressive on the stretch. I've tucked her with a ScroG net a couple times. LSTd her 3 time to the tomato cage as well.

She's 51" and in week 6 flower. Supposed to be 7 week stretch and then 7 to 10 weeks of buds.
She's on 11/13 light schedule to match her native day night schedule for flowering.

Is they in a 6ft tent?
There's still plenty of time to weave it into storks nest type shape to limit it's height..... lol

A Malawi I weaved a while ago

Here’s are my Ace Seed gals in my 5x5. We are 6.5 weeks into flowering and just went from 11hrs to 10.5hrs of light per day. Top left Golden Tiger, Malawi Bottom L-R Killer A5 Haze and 2 Golden Tiger x Panama. Only have 2 of her because the one was a runt and barely grew for 3-4 weeks, and now is the biggest gal in the tent. (one on the bottom right) Her replacement is looking pretty by turning a lovely pink on me.

First off, let me state Ive never grown in a tent, mainly in large, more open rooms, basements. Smallest space Ive flowered plants in is probably about a 4 x 4 in a huge concrete basement. And a 1000W MH, or a 1000w Hortilux HPS. I did have really really good ventilation though. I used MH when they first came out around 1977-78, and switched to Hortilux HPS 1000w 30 years ago. And Ive never had a problem with stretching to much under a Hortilux 1000w HPS, and as a matter of fact Ive had to raise the HPS before, because the plants are so compact. The Original HPS, with No BLUE I never used. I believe Hortilux was the first in the 90s to add BLUE to their HPS bulbs.

If growing from clones, I of course root the clones.
Most everyone here will be familiar with how I do this as it has been said a million times on hundreds of forums, and books.

t.

Say this clone is 6 inches tall.

Also one of the strains we grow is a 2006 Willie Nelson. Its 100% Sativa. Highland Nepali x Vietnam Black. 100+ days flowering Stretches 80 days if you give it enough soil. Im using this strain as an example of how we often grow it. Sometimes its started 11/13 from clone. Just depends. But this would be using 1 plant under a 4 x 4.

After clone has a good root ball, of which I will start/root these in an 18oz plastic cup, in Promix BX. Not root Bound. I will transplant this cut into a 5 gallon container/grow bag with Promix BX, so I can cut the bag off of the plant later on.
I will then put the cut into the 5 gallon container.

I will then place the plant under a 1000w Hortilux HPS, or a Gavita DE HPS. Ill veg it a week for the roots to grab into the new doil, and then I will BEND the plant over. How much depends on how flexible it is. I will also train all of the secondary branches to point towards the light. After you train the initial branches, you wont have to mess with doing that anymore.

I also bend the plantabout 80% down,,, and leave the growing tip alone. Also if you want to slow the growth down??? Bend the crap out of the growing tip, this has basically the same affect as topping, but you keep the growing tip. I dont like to mess much with the growing tip, unless to slow its growth.

Ill veg this cut 30 days in 5 gallons.

Then at that point, I will transplant this plant into a 20 gallon container of Promix BX. Usually a plastic tote. Put it back under 1000w, veg 4-7 more days to get the plant settled, and make sure the transplant goes well.

This plant will easily take up the full 4 x 4 area, and can produce up to 24oz. The root-ball will also take up the whole 20 gallon container when done.

This strain stretches more than any Ive ever seen. And the secondary branches get HUGE. I cant grow this one outside here in Ky because its not done until mid-late November. Outside this plant would go 12-15 feet tall. And just as wide. Grown right, it has huge, dense buds for a Sativa.

I'm gonna read this thoroughly when I get home, very interesting. What I'm also fascinated by it the deliberate reducing of the daylight schedule. I forgot what this technique is called but got wind of it about a month ago or so, just decided to give it a try recently, I'm 5 weeks into flower and I'm at 11 hours on at the moment. Not Sativa or landrace yet but I will be soon. Is this more popular with Sativa's or just in general as a good practice?

IIve read conflicting information. I read some info a few weeks ago about this on Instagram, and while I cant all the specifics, the bottom line was they thought the evidence pointing towards 11/13 was more beneficial.
I believe this was for weed in general and not specifically sativas.

I must have been a blond at one time..I started a thread on the subject and forgot about it.. I found it and someone replied explaining it like this

"The dark period is what is more important for flowering - it tells the plant that winter is coming and I better reproduce".

It's better known as the 12-1 Lighting Method.

The stars must be lining up for me somehow, I checked my DLI for amusement yesterday and saw it at 39. Little high for me personally, it jarred my memory a bit on this 12-1 lighting method.

Anyways, if you have a chance check out the thread and look for (Bud Man 43) posts.. his buds are HUGE and he swears by this method.

Coming back to this thread, I have a few seeds that are supposedly Landrace Durban Poison that I got from Greece. Come to find out (way later) that there's no such thing as a Landrace Durban Poison... so not sure what I have now.
