How tf do you decide strains?

If you could get certified clones then thats the best way to get a keeper strain. Otherwise research and pic your breeders. I would stay US based because of customs and being able to reach the breeders directly and get some sort of decent quality and customer service if you need it. Also the fact that you have forums and social media to back it up and also to reach the breeders directly.

Assuming that I am in the United States and not Australia?

I’m down under mate

Clones is not an option

I have bought several strains in the past from europe just going by what I have heard of. Currently I'm just growing critical kush which has been a good strain but everyone keeps hyping that american strains are somehow better in every way and I want to try some have looked at some american seed banks but damn they all have crazy names and there's so many choices it seems impossible to choose. It seems like a lot of these seeds are incredibly expensive although I cannot remember what I paid for the seeds I currently have, am growing and have grown from.

So many choices of crazy names my head spins, how do you decide?
Start w the effect u are looking for. Then limitations on your grow , go from there . Everything is good now

I don't think I framed my question in the right way, for whatever effect and growth you are looking for there are 1000 strains out there claiming to be amazing at that and they all have crazy names, I always look at ones that claim to be potent and large yeilding but Idk how much of the shit I can trust also. It's a crasy landscape full of too many choices to choose from to me lol

Like I said start with desired effect and then move on from there it will be a process of elimination and hopefully you have it narrowed down toward the end hope this helps

Still didn't get to the core of what I meant but this is an old post other people had a lot of good input more toward the answers I was looking for ie. Follow breeders on social media to try to get a good look at their product and stuff of that sort.

Research!
Check out Confident Cannabis! Their website is insanely intuitive and shows you the chemical makeup and availability of the strains. The more data we harness, the better for all of us. Good luck!

Basically this question was asking people how they research... Never heard of confident cannabis, thanks ill check it out.

Im going to unfollow this necro thread now...
You definitely can if you got the answers you were looking for, but you just posted the below so I figured you didn't, and the site that I linked will help you answer all of that. This site uses actual testing data to show the *actual* thc, cbd, and terpene content to each strain from each grower (as in, they can't just claim it's the same percentage as the same strain from a grower elsewhere), how available they are (meaning how popular), and connects you to wholesalers who sell that exact thing that you decide on. That is all of the information you're looking for, right? Is there something I'm missing about your request? The whole point to Confident Cannabis' business model is to provide full transparency and education regarding the chemical makeup of strains and what they *actually* do to you beyond just the percentage of thc. 'Potent' is subjective, that's the whole point. CC has good information if that's what you're actually looking for.
Reading your responses it kinda seems like you just want to complain about it. If that's the case, good luck man! Either way, I hope you find what you're looking for!

I decide by what I've smoked myself, if I'm familiar with the strain .....or one of the parents OF the strain.

It definitely isn't easy for me either. That's why I'm trying to pop the very best seeds I can. I want to find a plant that everybody else wants. I figure the trading scene might open up for me if I have something worthy to offer.
I'm in the same boat but I feel like if I cross first the pheno will be that much more rare . I mean if you think about it what makes you think you're going to get a pheno that I don't? If u truly want a plant that everyone wants u should make it yourself

I decide by a few things experience for one do i like its parents and whats the effect like? If i aint tryed them then i go by recommendations from friends who know there shit occasionally il just say fuck it and pick one at random but again i will usually do a bit of research on it first if possible it always pays to know what your in for before you grow it like feeding and environment preferences structure and height and is it very stable if its new probably not thats my thinking on choosing strains anyway

I agree, making your own little cross that nobody's ever tried is definitely a way to get something different, but you've got to select the right parents yourself and you may have to run a lot of seeds to find a true queen. I do fiddle around with making my own crosses with the goal of creating something different. But I also try to buy seeds from smaller breeders who use rarer plants. As you said, I don't have a better chance than you do if you bought the same seeds, but if the breeder only makes say 500 packs for the entire world, there may not be anybody within 100 miles of me even trying that strain, yet alone pheno hunting and cloning a true winner. I don't have any illusions of finding a world renowned clone, but if everybody in my area is growing cookies and cakes and custards, a great Kashmiri Hashplant or a Malawi/Michoacan or a Panama/Pakistani or anything unusual is gonna give people a changeup even if I'm not the only person growing that worldwide. Even something common like a cookie cross could be unique if it's crossed with a unique partner that it's never bred with. That's kind of my philosophy, whether I'm on the right track or not.
