He is one smart dude. When he comes on CNBC or whatever, he's someone I take seriously. He's not always right about everything, but he's right about stuff way more often than not. He probably should have won the Nobel years ago, but I think they make you wait until there's more grey in your hair. He'd be an awesome choice for Secretary of Treasury or Fed Chairman. Him as Fed Chairman, and Warren Buffet as Secretary of the Treasury, that'd be like the Financial Dream Team. (And Caroline Kennedy for Secretary of Education would be nice. That's her thang.)

What'd really be nice would be seeing an axe taken to the Department of Education, and the office tossed onto the ash heap of history. Democrats have been promising better education, and they still haven't achieved it. Republicans have been promising better education, and they still haven't achieved it. Something tells me, that perhaps centralized education is the problem.

Get this crap cleaned up so that we can all stop being poisoned (and making the pharm companies wealthier and wealthier, with our privatized health care system). We have poisoned our waters badly. Our air quality sucks so bad that children in this day and age develop asthma at alarming rates compared to even just twenty years ago.
Get the GD nuke power plants SECURED. For god's sake, those things are so easy to attack, and yet you never hear a word about it. Read RFK's Crimes Against Nature for more on that topic. OMG, if everyone knew about how vulnerable those plants are, we'd all be shaking in our boots.
I want the plastics removed as much as we possibly can. It's so toxic. We are ingesting that stuff' It's in all of our bodies, waiting to turn into cancer.
It's also made out of petroleum, it's necessary for medical uses (syringes, surgical equipment, etc). This planet is running out of fossil fuels. That stuff needs to be saved for the things that cannot be made otherwise (medical equip, etc).
Get going, NOW, on alternative energy sources. Great for the economy, great for all of our foreign relations re oil, etc. Oh? And did I say great for the economy?
It seems to me now that with all the financial news of the past two weeks, Bill Clinton's slogan from his campaign needs to be resurrected: IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID.
If we can shift things a bit, maybe just maybe, a lot of these messes will start to get cleaned up. It's not going to happen overnight, or even in four years, but there is not better time than now to start.
I'm pumped about who might show up in this cabinet. I hadn't even thought about Caroline Kennedy. Now, there's someone who knows her stuff. Great idea, Bongulator!

But anyway, I think you are probably right; we won't be burned up by the sun for a long, long time, although that is eventually coming.
HOWEVER . . . meteors are a danger. Here's something I found doing a quick google search. National Geographic has had articles on this topic too.

Science is where it's at. It has to be. Technology has the potential to get us back on our feet economically, as well as to do some good--a lot of good. I don't know about anyone else, but one in a million odds of a meteor hitting the earth that could threaten our existence? If I had those odds playing powerball or some lottery game, I'd be buying tickets all the time. Those are some pretty good odds.

What about education? That was also brought up back there. What is the alternative to gov't-funded schools? The wealthy will be educated and the poor will continue their downward spiral? And with this economy, how many more will be joining the ranks of the poor?
I am well aware of the educational deficiencies in this country. Hell yes, we needs better schools. But the answer cannot be that we put an end to the public school system. And I am saying this as someone who was educated in private schools (but public schools for university).
The NCLB has failed. All it ever really was, imo, was a snippet, an effective little line that simply added to the Potemkin Village this administration has constructed for our viewing pleasure.

Pay teachers more, and you'll find better qualified people choosing that as a career. When most states are paying jack squat for teachers' salaries, many people who would make outstanding teachers have no choice but to choose other fields.
Everyone is entitled to an education. Wouldn't it be awesome if the US suddenly found itself ahead of the pack in the sciences? Yes, we've got some great research ongoing in this country, but we have fallen behind many of our "friends," especially in the sciences.

If you believe that Meteors are such a threat, why are you voting for Obama, who wants to not weaponize space?
I mean, even if the Missile Defense System does nothing but hang there, it can still be used to also defend us from meteors (medium sized ones anyway. Planet-Killers would have to have a more drastic alternative.)
