I tried air pots and I honestly didn't see much of a difference. My yields, while not the super yields I see claimed on here all the time, are satisfactory. Air pots are reusable a few times I guess but I dunno. The idea seems cool for sure. I had side by sides though, several times and did not see much diff.

...he seems to love them but the low stars are for the high price. YOWZA...a five gallon pot ain't cheap..$27+ for one and $20 each for a pack of 5...look out spackle buckets and drill bit...lol...but do the holes in the air-pots tilt down I wonder...to help the water run down and not out of the holes?..although I did see other models that look like nothing but 5 gallon -+ trash cans with holes drilled in em' so.... I wouldn't mind trying one to see a side by side myself ...although from what you say.....What it DOES seem good for is for the first stage before you transplant. Also what I did just find out is that five gallons is a pot thats 12"x12"...so I reckon the pots I have my girls in now must be 3+ gallons.
..So now I'm on a mission to see if I can find em' a bit cheaper..I love gimmicks...lol
EDIT: Missed this part which I can't do with a spackle bucket and drill bit:"There are no flat surfaces due to the inward and outward pointed cones, which eliminates any chance of starting the spiraling process as well as dramatically increases growth rates."
