now where have i heard this sort of thing before?
I'll defend it forever, people really have no idea what lightbulbs they want, because they dont even know what their choices are in the first place; It's a feild where most Americans remain ignorant entirely... You took the quote out of context though, I understand the point you're trying to make but it's a mischaracterization of my position.
with the exception of a few hid's, all made in china. nice.
Well, over 90% of the phosphers used in flouro's are from China (which reminds me, those phosphers are getting more expensive so expect CFLs to raise in price soon if they haven't near you already).

it would have been difficult to take those words out of context, as this is a theme that runs throughout most every post you have made, that us poor simple folk simply don't understand. this is, in fact, one of the pillars of the statist's philosophy, that the people must be forced to do what is right.

it may be quite true that the general public is woefully uninformed concerning their choices, but the answer is not the use of force and the limiting of choice. the answer is to educate, something that should be done by the very people who are trying to sell us these new and improved technologies. i realize that your rather obvious lack of confidence in the private sector would lead you to distrust free enterprise to be honest about their products, but isn't it part of government's job to protect the public from patently false claims? if the state is incapable of enforcing such a simple matter as maintaining a bit of truth in advertising, how can it be trusted with the far reaching mandates and regulations proposed by you statists?

banning incandescent light bulbs to reduce our dependence on foreign oil is not the sixth plank of the communist manifesto, no matter how many long-winded attempts you make at portraying it as such.

^ lol

Seriously, this is an example where government intervention helped the industry - not hurt it - and it lead to more choices, higher quality choices, and lesser fuel consumption... I really dont see the problem.

And I dont distrust the private sector, I just understand that there are such things as market failures... In the case of lightbulbs we were using an inferior product for over 100 years and the market failed to innovate... Energy is a huge economic issue and so government intervention not only helped to spur innovation, it also helped to alleviate some of those economic pressures via lower energy consumption. What is so bad about government intervention in this case? You can't get incandescents? Well, your single choice was replaced by at least a half dozen more - what the fuck is the problem? Dont like any of the superior products being presented? I think you're just being a slave to idealogy... Crying over a non-issue so that you can remain idealogically pure and without compromise...

.so when we burn coal to make electricity do you realize how much mercury (Hg) we put into the environment ???look it up ..do some research.
Actually not much anymore, they scrub the air real clean now, look it up, do some research...

Coal fired power plants are responsible for less than 1% of total Mercury pollution. http://www.fossil.energy.gov/programs/powersystems/pollutioncontrols/overview_mercurycontrols.html

US Department of Energy said:
Coal-fired power plants contribute only a small part of the total worldwide emissions of mercury.
In February 14, 2002, the Bush Administration announced its Clear Skies Initiative for multipollutant controls. The proposal required significant emission reductions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury through an allowance-based cap-and-trade program. Specifically for mercury, the Clear Skies Initiative calls for a two-phase reduction in emissions below 1999 levels (48 tons) with an approximate 45 percent reduction beginning in 2010 and a 70 percent reduction beginning in 2018.

BUSH!!!

no need for me to do the research already knew that but it still does release Hg in the air and that was my point..The guy thinks the only way we are introduce to mercury is from CFL's..we are exposed to why more by nature and man right now...but on another note .. in order to insure that we maintain those clear sky standards we must keep regulations in place...so this is another great reason why we need regulations...and I see on that chart that utility boilers are sitting at the highest for percent for emssions of Hg..you do realize what utility boilers are and what they are use for..hint ( cut on your lights)...what point were you were trying to make including the chart???....anywoot lets keep those regulations in place so we can keep our planet clean..Thank you Nodrama for supporting regulations

uti (i love that) i seldom take issue with what you say, but this statement is wrong. the general public is way more informed on what their choices are, than anyone who is not in their situation.

do we have uniformed people? surely, but most people know what they need and whats available in their economic range than anyone else.

I like how you disregard any graphs/numbers/data that I present and tell me that's "not how things work in the real world" so I give you real world experience and you disregard it too.

you gotta admit, mame: that is funny!

i was going to call you "mr. let-me-research-that" when you first showed up here.

nothing wrong with that, but anti-intellectualism can be humorous.

your real world experience is that you went online and learned as much as you could about bulbs in ten minutes? thats your "real world"?

and then you have the balls to say that the majority of americans dont know their choices? thats your "real world" experience?

why? cuz the ignorant americans dont have internet? or an electric bill? or fancy lighting? is that why we are so stupid in YOUR "real world"?

yes, show me how to plot arrogance vs ignorance vs condescention on a chart......

I will admit, it did make me laugh out loud.

I try to be data driven so as to avoid a complete surrender to partisan bias but it just seems to annoy the righties whenever I post another graph - rather than the intended purpose of strengthening my point... haha. I will say this though, RIU helped me get over my addiction to World of Warcraft (haven't played in months) with all the oh so heated debates goin on up in here.
