Sorry for asking, I thought you meant a specific region. I have been in Pakistan during Ramadan thats all, many moons ago before the western hatred really came to a head.
No worries Woo.... I have been to Tunisia and Morocco during the period of Ramadan. Had a great time of course, no horror stories.

Would we have the option
NOT to have insurance?
National Insurance contributions are only £2.50 per week ($4) and if you earn less than £16000 pa ($25000 roughly) you get it paid back every 4 weeks. So the comparison is hardly relevant is it $200pa here vs. $14500pa in the US. Also our NI contributions ar mostly for state pensions and other benefits you may need during your life time. So the real cost of healthcare is equivalent to a weeks shoppping bill, if that. But you can only opt out of NI contributions if you earn less than £5645pa...

So the answer is no. Do you find it acceptable to fine somone or ultimately imprison someone if they think they, rather than government, should be making choices for themselves?

I've heard people say the poor folks can get on medicare or medicaid as an option. Not always so.We make too much for medicaid, and can't afford family coverage through his work.So We pay cash when we really have to go to the doc. So someone else yells..."Hey, they can't refuse you medical treatment here in the U.S!" Sure.I wanna go into debt and get nagged by the folks in accounts payable every time I have to step into the office thereafter. And they DO do it.They treat you like shit. And if you can't pay fast enough, they send it to a collection agency...where you are harrassed constantly with phone calls, letters, etc, ruining any chance of credit you may have had. Yeah. Do I wanna sell myself into financial slavery,or do I wanna grit my teeth and try to bear it and feed my kids? Not really an option, is it? Besides, if it gets too bad, cremation is fairly cheap in comparison.

This youtube link makes a pretty good case for government run health care with one caveat. All the examples it cites, with the exception of Medicare, are not federal programs. The fire department, public schools, and the water works are local government-funded programs.

Which reinforces what I've been saying all along.

This is a state/local issue.

The federal government has no business meddling in local policy issues.

So, local governments don't get any federal money?
They do. And I am sure you mean 'taxpayer money' as the federal government is not the original source of any revenue, merely the funnel. Primarily in the form of federal grants. Nor is the federal government the primary source of funding to local governments.

However, such funding runs contrary to the 10th Amendment because it is used to coerce state/local governments. Thus the federal government meddles into state/local affairs.

But that is beside the point....

The Health Care debate is not about LOCAL government control at all, it is about FEDERAL control.

We need the Feds to assure that states do whats right for its people... Some states would only build fire stations in certain neighborhoods the Feds come in say these are the rules or we will not give you this funding if you don't follow them... so the state assures its people that fire stations are built everywhere because the Feds won't give them fundings if they don't... same with your public schools, police, roads, etc. Heres a little history lesson ..because as you know I deal with facts: The Little Rock Nine were a group of African-American students who were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. The Little Rock Crisis, which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Arkansas Governer Orval Faubus, and then attended after the intervention of President Eisenhower. Feds had to make sure states do whats right..This is the United States of America and we united with the Federal Goverment...History teaches us that in order to assure that all the people in this Great Nation get treated equal you will always need the Federal Goverment. Thank you for helping make our point with the video...Now I can link it

Get real, the govt takes decisions for me all the time that I have no choice over...Whether I find it acceptable or not isnt the point here, stop your navel gazing and accept that we dont live in free societies we live in guided societies. How much money is spent in the US each year on litigation interpreting your precious constitution???:wall:

Well here's some +rep to mitigate the -rep you're getting for debating with the elites. They use the power of -rep to hush those who disagree with them. Quite sad, really.

I +repped him for an earlier post. I didnt realise neg rep still existed, unfortunate I think. You pay a minimal fee and get to reduce someones rep, rather oligarchic if you ask me.

Well, the elites do get certain privileges, which I'm fine with, but they're heavily abused. Say anything other than an automatic republican response, and two or three elites will -rep you. Name-call, and you will get in trouble. When they name-call, it's ignored. If you call them out on their name-calling (which is being ignored), then you get accused of name-calling and get in trouble. I've considered paying numerous times and gaining elite status, but then I see how the elites behave - I don't want to be a part of that. I don't support that type of behavior. I do support RIU and legalization/growing cause, but I do not support what happens in this section. If the politics section gets closed, I'll send in my money right away.
