I'll offer my opinion on that one, If you like. I will put it in layman speak but, I would recommend you research breeding for a more detailed explanation..
So, here's a viable question for you. WHY DO SEEDS COST SO MUCH !! I mean how can people charge $90 for 15 White Widow seeds? or more?

From what I have found, the prices for seeds a certain strain vary, depending on who you buy them off.
If your paying slightly more from a seed bank who developed that particular strain, then you are paying for the work that went into creating that strain, and most importantly making it stable. So as long as you grow with a certain amount of skill (no need to be an expert), you will get plants that are uniform, potent and more or less the same quality as the Parents (That your seeds were bred from).
If you buy that same strain from a seedbank that did not create that strain originally, then you should be paying upto half the price. This is due mainly to the fact that, seeds from the original parents have been bought from the original breeders, the seeds are grown, and the plants that result, are bred. So you are not buying seeds from the original parents, you are buying seeds from the offspring of the original parents.
Now, buying seeds in the first way (more expensive) almost guarantees you end up with plants as good as the originals. However you can buy the cheaper versions and still end up with plants just as stable, potent etc. as the originals. Buying cheaper seeds does not result in poor quality plants buy any means!
One of my favourite strains is called Cyber Crystal, You can get it for less than £30, it's a very forgiving grow, much alike white widow, and fantastic for indoors.
Now aside from what's above. With some breeders you are paying mucho for class, with others you are paying mucho for no other reason than their cheek and willingness to rip people off!
So the best advice I can offer for any first time grower, is to find a reputable seedbank, choose some seeds that are easy to grow and won't cost you the earth. And have some fun. If later on you wan't something a bit special, then you can decide weather or not you want to pay a bit extra for your seeds.
