it happened a lot back in the 80's when the estate tax was based on the "value of the land" not what it sold for, but unless you had cash in hand to pay the tax you always had to either sell a big chunk of your land, or take a crippling mortgage just to pay the tax.
the tax man said the land was worth twice what we had to sell it for and the S&L bust ensured that there would be no mortgage, so we got fucked good and proper by the death tax.
