I posted a responds earlier but it never made it to the thread. For some reason, I can't get my laptop to receive photos from my camera any longer. I'll try to get some up asap.
Did you figure out if it was a cal or mag def? I was just curious after seeing the pic of that leaf with that def that you put up on your thread. I had a mag def that I had to deal also.
We should be able to use tap water, well water, RO water, distilled water, rain water, etc. without ANY calcium or magnesium additives and without deficiencies. It should all be in the soil if properly amended and mineralized from what I've read on the ROLS threads.

Let me start this with apology, as I see this thread is over a year old and beat to death! I went looking for a modified SS recipe, and this is where google took me. Glad it did. There is a lot of good info here. A lot of beautiful gardens.
I Just moved my clones from under the dome, to the plastic cups.
I am in process of getting all ingredients together so I can get soil cooking. Should be ready just in time for flower.
Would like to add the greensand, neem seed meal and maybe the rice hulls. I remember reading there was gonna be a final recipe with those things figured in. If not I will just give a little less than what the label says.
Also I recall seeing more worm castings added to the modified recipe.
If anyone has tried the extra 3 items and/or the extra castings and has input I would greatly appreciate it. This is my first SS run and need to get it cooking soon. I want to pack the most goodies in the mix as i can...I just don`t want to over do it.
Anyway I`m just happy to be here. Thanks in advance for all ideas and thoughts,

Hey man , i remember Subcool saying that greensand was useless in indoor as it take about 5 years to break down - you might wanna use it outdoor though. He also said that extra worm casting will never hurt, but he gives a number on the small side as the shit it pretty expensive.
I have no info on the other items

Thanks bro. I have also heard greensand takes a while to break down. I would still think it must have some benefit along the way. Why else would Roots Organic put it in their soil?
I read neem meal has small bit of NPK, all the micros and some trace elements. Helps roots and foliage. Supposed to help against root rot, powdery mildew, gnats and more. I would be happy if it just helped with the gnats.

Maybe RO takes has a main dirt that has been sitting for five years plus on wich they add all the amendments. I guess they wouldnt just throw it in there for the sake of it. Don't ask me to find the particular moment where sub says that thing only is usefull for outdoor garden

Recyclers should keep track of greensand usage, IMO. As it tends to hold moisture, one should be sure not to get too much sand in the mix. Being that it takes so long to breakdown, over usage in recycled soil can also lead to nutrient and micronutrient imbalances. Leaning on the side of less is more, I would add to my soil mix once. Then, as I recharged old soil, I would only add greensand to new soil being added to the mix.

I'm adding rice husks/hulls to give a silicon boost and strengthen stems more and also neem seed meal to prevent infestations (hopefully).
sidewing dropped me a pm a few weeks back saying his results with both were positive, noticed stronger stems and no pests so he's gonna keep using them.
and with EWC add as much a u Can afford without messing up the structure of the soil too much, add a bit of coco if adding loads of EWC to balance out the air/water ratios of the soil.

Thanks to all of you guys for the solid info. I researched neem seed meal for almost 2 hrs last night. Tons of benefits for the plants. Only drawback I heard about it was it stinks pretty bad in the first week or 2. Any scary stinky neem stories? lol
Also, have any of you harvested from a modified SS grow yet? Just curious if the yields and quality are close to same for others as they are for sidewing? I have read this thread at least 3 times and have decided modified SS is the route I wanna go.

Not yet, but I'm anywhere from 2 week's in to working on 4 I'll get some pics up this weekend. First impressions are favorable, looks like they will taste wonderful as the smells are very nice as soon as you see frost on the plants, these start at about week 3, I have not been using soil for a while, been dtw soilless scrog indoors and I wanted a very easy maintenance type of soil and so far all I have done is add some silica and some rhizo and a bit of cannazyme and they haven't disappointed yet, well except for the damn bud worms, gotta break out the bt.

Same thing here, i havent harvested one yet but all the plant i'm flowering using the soil are looking phenomenal:
Number of bud sites is increased. Frost comes on earlier (serious resin production at week 2 on a sour kush that started producing at week 3/3.5 on bottled nutes) and the amount of resin is increased no doubt. I still got some stem that are purpling but i'm thinking my pots might be a little small for the girls or maybe i should add a litlle more coco next time as the soil is pretty "heavy"...or maybe i should go back to ph'ing my water haha i'll figure that out.
Can't wait to taste the buds now.
I must say i'm being really tighter than before on many small details that definetly improve my grow but:
#1 I wasnt a "bad" grower before so even though i could expect result from my effort the soil has a perfect npk ratio it seems.
#2 The simplicity that comes with this soil is amazing. I wouldnt say that i'd give up on nutes if they gave better end product, but if using Iguana Juice and a few booster gave me good result it was nothing like what i'm seeing in my tent.

Yeah, I`m pretty stoked to get this thing going. Seems to good to be true, but seeing is believing. Better results, healthy plants, little to no bottles and no ph worries. Clean tasting smooth smoke.

Yes that is actually one plant in a 15g smart pot with 30%ish SSvand the other 70 is a happy frog (1bag) ffof (2bags) mix with some ewc and mycos mix, I have feed silica 2ml p gal every few waters. Even few water time I'll add a bit of rhizo and or cannazyme (hygrozyme is cheaper and can also be used, I use canna just because I know it and dont need a lot so cost is not a big concern at this point).

Holy shit bro! That`s just one? What a beast!! Very nice. Is your 30% SS RO, or happy frog/ ffof ? Just put my girls in cups less than a week ago. Grow shop was out of RO, so I got happy frog. I also mixed in EWC and mycos. Watered with liquid kelp solution, 1/4 strength.
I heard (after I transplanted them) I should not use happy frog full strength. They seem to be doing great though.

Happy is just basically a soil less mix with microhiza and other bene's, in my experience you can go full strength with that if you use bottle's, the mix I use is a bit hot but they get over it fast and like I said, little water and a bit of silica all the way through veg and you should be good to go. Then about the time they grow into the 1g's (2 -3 weeks) they are ready for 7's, and that is when I intro the ss, I put about 1/3 ss and spread it out to build up a nice hole to put in and put mycos in it and try to get stem buried as deep as possible then the veg soil to file up. That one went in 3g then the 15g she takes up a 3x3 trellis and about 2 weeks into flower. It's 3 weeks now but we been having strange weather lately and I'll wait till sun to post pics.

I`m gonna veg for around 2 months, give or take a week. Flower room still full and will be at least 5 to 6 wks till done. Plus I want my soil to cook as long as possible.
Nice set up with the trellis. Ahh, 3x3...when I first seen pic the other day my stoned eyes thought it was like a 6x6 lol damn camera angle, get ya every time! Still a beauty no less. Very healthy and exactly what I`m after.
Tired of dealing with sick plants, low yields. I mean been pullin 1 1/2 to 2. But if I can pull 3+ each, and have healthy plants with better tasting flowers I`m all in.
