SIP thread -- (Sub-Irrigated Planter)

This is a good idea. I need to restart some brown rice probiotics anyway, and have all the materials gathered. I will try this before a flush - if there is no improvement.

Plants are still drinking, and new, tiny growth might look greener. I don't know how much, if any, greening I can expect from existing growth.

I am starting to think I will add lime at next soil recycle.
Definitely add lime. langbeinite will also help with your mag. Have you tried fully draining the res and refilling with fresh water and a shot of h2o2? It's not enough to stop the microbial life in the dirt, but it's an emerency fix when you got root issues

I drained the reservoirs when I cleaned them. No algae or fungi were apparent where it stays dark, so that was a relief.

I did not try H2O2. I will look into this approach. Feel free to educate me if you are so inclined!

The langbenite I ordered just arrived. I am not sure if I will use it now, but I have had very minor issues in the past with Mg, S, and K during stretch. I do not test my soil (other than with cannabis growth), and suspect I will need this extra replenishment regardless. If it weren't for the leaves twisting, I would have gone straight to adding langbenite.

I very much appreciate all the help!

On adding langbeinite, @cannabiscrusader, when do you add it? And, in what amounts. I run City Picker SIPs, and coots mix. I consistently run into deficiency, assuming magnesium, maybe other elements during and after stretch.

I add the langbeinite, azomite, and dolomite lime in the base mix along with dr earth 4-4-4, 3-9-4, ewc.
My sips hold 10-11g of soil, so if u run 5gal buckets cut it in 1/2. Go light on the langbenite, it's powerful stuff. I've topdressed with it in the mix, but only outdoors.
Langbenite 1tsp
Dolomite. 1/3 cup
Azomite. 1/3 cup
Ewc. 6. Cups
Dr earth 4-4-4 1 cup in the mix, 1 cup topdressed
Dr earth 3-9-4 1 1/2 cups in the mix 1 cup topdress
Perilite. %15

I reammend my sips after harvest, and keep about 1 gal of water in them to cook for 3 weeks while the previously amended sips run through.

It's a decent base mix. Too hot for sensitive plants, but a little leaf burn isn't the end of the world. Some research would say that the added stress leads to more resin production. That's what I tell myself anyways. Heavy feeders thrive in this mix. Light feeders test the pool with a tie, but they eventually jump in. Whether it's a swan dive or a belly flop is the question. But everyone makes it out of the pool with the hot tub life gaurd on duty.

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, was aware to go lightly with the langbeinite, and I've not used it in my base mix (Coots mix). I did try on my last two grow cycles, amending (top-dressed) a week ahead of flip, but I seem to still run into deficiency. 1 tsp doesn't seem like much in 10-11 gal. of soil. Perhaps I will try 1-2 tsp in each SIP. The City Picker SIP holds about 15 gal of soil each, so will go with 1.5 tsp when I mix up a new batch of soil. I haven't been reamending and reusing my soil, but just dumping into outdoor vegetable garden beds. Thanks again for sharing your methods. :peace:

Yes, it seems like very little, but @cannabiscrusader is spot on. Though langbeinite has a low salt index, it is still very much a salt.

I wonder if I'd be overdoing it on the langbeinite if I included 1-2 tsp into my soil mix, and then top dressed a bit ahead of flower also. I guess just be careful.
Yes, you would be over doing it. Dr earth also has mag, cal, and sulfur in it. You keep adding too much, you lock out other nutrients that show up as deficiencies. Then chase those until the leaves fall off. I've already dialed in the langbeinite in concert with the dr earth. It's potent stuff, and could potentially ruin your crop if you are too heavy handed. If you see any deficiencies, just add a splash of cal mag to your res. But don't be fooled by toxicity thinking it's a deficiency

Well, I guess I will just try to add some to my mix, and hope by doing that, magnesium will be there in the soil, available for the plant to uptake, and I will enjoy completely green foliage all the way to harvest! :D

I could swear I saw people saying they put nutes in their reservoirs, but I can't find it now.
Anyone put Cal/Mag directly in the res? Or should I do a light top water?

I go in the res on the rare occasion I have a mag difficiency. I only make a gallon of mix, the rest is water. Gives them that bump without too much kick. Don't top water, I've seen a sip get waterlogged and not be able to correct itself. Drowning the plant

My experience has been the exact opposite, at least with ProMix HP.

I filled my reservoir 24 hours before transplant @ day 20 (?) and noticed the bottom of the prepared hole was barely moist.

About two weeks later my plants were starting to lean. The top 3 - 4" of the medium were dry.

I figured there was a healthy tap root but no side roots to help support the plant so I started to water from the top every third feeding.

5 gallon pail with GroBucket, when the dip stick showed one I fed a gallon from the top which would produce about a litre of run off from the drain hole.

If you drill your drain hole in the correct position there will always be about 1 inch of air at the top of the insert.

This seems to be the trick !

So, totally saturated ProMix HP and Full reservoir every third feeding or so and my girls were Praying !

Six Shooter Auto, 48" high, bud back building (cut once) wet trimmed @ day 132 !

Nice plant. A sips medium needs to be fully saturated to perpetuate the wicking process. After the initial wet down, do not top water.

I used to top water all the time in my earthbox. Sometimes just to get my top dress most. Sometimes watering in bas build a flower. Never had a problem. Id only water in up to 1000ml though.

Thanks !

I did quite a bit of "reading" before trying the SIP's and never heard that....

Not sure if I want to transplant into a saturated medium.

And my medium is quite dry before I top water again, no problems.

BTW > I tried three plants with SIP solo's, didn't seem work that well but they did go on to be decent sized plants.

@ day 18.

YMMV

Some folks mulch. Some use a lid or plastic. Cover crops, even. Depending on your medium/wick and RH, your soil's top layer might get dryer.

I ended up covering with black plastic, which also breaks the fungus gnat life cycle. I got roots poking up out the soil now.
