I dont think you can compare the 2, I am sure they would yield similar but the 400W won't give you dense nugs, the AF will.

I think it is hard to compare HID to LED, and comparisons that are made, are vague at best. I never cared for LED = HID comparisons.
I think where Fero came up with 400w HID comparison, my test growers initial testings of that spectrum/ratio/intensity per watt per color, from 173w, we pulled 4-7oz per light from multiple strains. And the average grow from a 400w HID is 1/4-1/2LB, but it is also possible to get a full LB from a 400w HID. There is no way in hell this 173w light will ever pull a full LB. And I also believe the average grower will not be getting 7oz without a little practice first, and also high yielding genetics.

You know I'm an LED fanboi but I have to ask why you think a 400w wouldn't yield dense nuggets? There are many, many grow journals with dense nugs from a 400w. I thought it was the LED guys (us!) that were supposed to be defending the led panels against "flarf" accusations! hehe.

In my opinion, the average grower will get loose fluffy buds with 1 x 400W. Nothing wrong with that in a way it looks like you got more than you got. It makes for nice bags. 600W-1000W is where its at for dense nugs with HIDs.
And I am not saying you cant get dense nugs with 400W!!

I was only asking because 85% of my growing experience is with led's and normally we are the guys defending the panels against fluffy/flarf nugget claims. Not the other way around. heh.

I agree with this..........two different techs, both have their pros/cons, no need to have "equivalent to ???" bullshit..........I never got 1gpw+ with HID and when we converted to CMH bulbs are yields went down slightly but quality went way up IMO(same strains)......Takes a very special grower/plants to get 450+grams from a 400w hid and 7ounces from 173w is equally impressive..........get those pics up of your led panel ASAP

......well my shitty auto's and grower relationship has come to an end......scoped and #2 is still under 40% amber!, fuck it at lights off ill give them 3 days of darkness and chop them/no point continuing my stress......gives me just enough time to trim them and get a final dry weight before my vaca............that's it
....56watts/59th and final day of flower...................Thanks for everyone's help!, couldn't have finished this without the great advice I got. Wouldn't trade the helpful/friendly led crew here for any other forum/ much love RIU.........will take some pics of the chop/trim in three days.
