I was only thinking that a certain variety is only genetically predisposed to its own characteristics.
Selfing a plant for fem seed keeps the genes wrangled.
Whereas open pollination lets the variables be more variable.
Hmm, a lot more concise and eloquent after a bit of sleep.
Variability works both ways -- you are as likely to end up with a lower yielding plant as higher. The predisposition of its own characteristics would help a fem seed carry the yield traits of the mom and prevent low yield.
