Three types of hydro in a small tent on one airpump?

I have toyed around with the idea of using Peltier junctions on a cooling block in-line with my modular Dutch bucket systems. But I am not sure what to use as the cooling block material... Plastic isn't the best thermal conductor and metal will corrode and could mess with the plants, so until I can find a suitable material I have pretty much shelved the idea.
You have to use stainless steel

@JSB99,
What grade though because it will still corrode?
Especially if I use different alloys for connections, I believe this is called galvanic erosion.

Not sure, but people use stainless wort chiller coils for cooling their reservoir. So, whatever grade that is. You might be able to get more info on that if you ask around forum.

@JSB99,
Do you get pink mold in your ultrasonic fogger set up?
I tried using one and within months the whole inside of the reservoir was coated in pink mold.

No, sure don't. I get I little bit of crud if I use my tap water, but it cleans right up with a little rubbing alcohol. With purified, it stays pretty clean.

We had a couple of unseasonably warm days last week, and I really wanted an excuse to try them anyway, so I ordered 10 of the peltier cooling plates. I only have room for four of them on the heat sink, but I figured Id get extras incase some didnt work or quit. Turns out I needed more than the ten I ordered.

Total junk.

Only 3 of them seemed to cool much when I bench tested them with a 4th working so-so. The rest barely cooled at all or actually got hotter on both sides. ALL of them had warmer and colder places in them with some cooling on one part and heating on another part.

I went ahead and mounted the four best ones to a good sized heat sink with thermal paste and wired those 4 up to a power supply, and they dont work worth a damn. The hot side gets really hot, but the cold side wont drop more than 1 to 3 degrees at most when first powered up. After a minute at the most, the temp goes back up to room temp or above. Over all, the cold side heat sink only dropped maybe 3 deg at the start, before heating back up, while the hot side went up almost 30 degrees even with a fan.

Im bummed.

@Larry3215,

I hate to be a jerk about it, but the Peltiers you got were probably originally purchased from Aliexpress for a couple of bucks each and then tested and the best ones saved off and the rest re-sold on Amazon.

People do this all the time with Chinese made COBs, so you end up with someone else’s trash.

Try ordering direct from Aliexpress and see if they are any better, but you’ll have to wait over a month to get them.

Or you could pay like $5-$7 each and the quality of those will be considerably better.

The cold side should get pretty frosty and the hot side should get too hot to touch.

The few I have tested (years ago from surplus places like All Electronics) got extremely cold and extremely hot, very quickly…

One thing about Peltiers is they require a heat sink on both sides and you will have to use passive cooling to draw the hot air away or else it migrates into the cold area.
You mention using a fan, but was it connected to a heatsink?

Do you have these on current limiters? Because otherwise they may continue to draw current until they trip a breaker or melt themselves and short out.

Without a heat sink, what is happening is the heat is migrating into the cold side and the temperature is equalizing.
It’s called something like thermal breakdown or something like that… I forgot the term for it.

Don’t lose hope, you just got some junk.

How long ago did you get them?

Complain to the seller, they know they sold you trash…
If they don’t get back to you, then take some photos or a video of the peltiers showing that both sides get hot right away and then request a refund from Amazon. Once Amazon sees the photos or video, you’ll get your money back.

Let us know how it turns out…

Yeah, these were tested individually, clamped to a heat sink on the hot side, with no fan, for the initial testing. That test run was only for a few seconds - just to see if they worked at all and how cold they got after less than 30 seconds. I messed around with some of these many years ago, so I know they can burn up easily if not handled correctly.

The final test was also with a heat sink with an active fan on the hot side, with thermal paste on both sides, and a matching heat sink on the cold side. My power supply is a CCCV adjustable lab supply.

I agree, if I was willing to pay more, the quality would probably be a LOT better.

Im Amazon Prime member - and I Just bought them this week - they will have no problem taking it back on my word that they dont work.

Oh no!!

I just finished harvesting my first grow - which turned out pretty good despite my best efforts to screw it up. Im starting to prep my tent to change over to the hydro setup from the soil pots, and I had a nasty thought - how screwed am I if my last crop went hermie and made tons of seeds right at the end?

I didnt see anything until I was making tincture with EverClear and noticed tons of very small seeds in three of the four plants. IM pretty sure that was from some serious stress I put them through in the last 2 to 3 weeks - over feeding combined with lights being toooo close.

Does that mean I have pollen all over the inside of my tent, lights, fans, ducting, carbon filters, etc, etc, etc?

Am I going to have to sterilize everything or is there a simple solution or is it no big deal?????

Lol i always heard pollen dies after 2 weeks in grow room environment .

But i do not know if this is truth:)

Its all good i just cut a tranny out of my room lol

LOL I hope you're right about that. Some one on another board said water kills pollen too, so I will get most of it when I clean up - I hope!

Im still worried about bits in the ducting or stuck in crannies in the lights, fans, etc, but it will be quite a while before I have any ladies ready to be serviced, so it sounds like I am worrying for nothing - I hope :)

I run one copper, one stainless heat exchanger and one coopernickle and have not had issues with the copper one at all. But have not tested for elevated copper, need to do that lol. 66742022-6B22-4359-A83B-FEB37814DF1B.jpeg

One small thing ive noticed with my mini mock up
Is constant nutrient flow is needed.

As the plants on the high side of the mock up are growing slower then the ones one the drains side.

A little peek at the roots show the plants found the tray below and have let their roots grow down into the "res" lol

Ill get you some pics tonight larry ive been way busy

So i didnt get to design my newest idea
