Yeah everyone will have there own opinion on this for sure, that's because you really could use anything from one 400w on a 4x4 to two 600w lamps in a 4x4.
To me, it seems the key is to maxamize your light to the point you can still control the heat.
But you also have to keep in mind your headroom, since a 1000w needs around 16" below it to the top of the plant or else it can burn them.
Yes 600w hid lights are the most efficient in terms of lumens/wats that's why some use two 600w lamps dimmed down to 400w each, using 800w, they can almost equal the same lumens as one 1000w lamp.
In addition, it also depends on your hood and how well it spreads your light. You could use a 600w light in a 6x6 tent, but it would be difficult to light the whole tent unless you had a great good, if you had a hood that directs light straight down, you would have to raise the 600w lamp so high in order to reach all corners, it would be doing nothing because light dimmeshes expontially the farther away it gets.
I use a 1000w in my 4x4 because I can dim it I'd I need to, and it takes up less room then two 600w lamps. I was considering getting a 600w for my 4x4, but upgrading didn't cost much more, and I will get a much higher yield with my 1000w. I also use a huge 8" inline fan to exhaust the room to keep it cool, those 1000 watters put out ALOT of heat.
