Gas is expensive in the UK and the rest of Europe because their govenments tax the hell out of it.

At the time of the first race, gasoline was not superior to batteries as a form of power. Keep in mind that the electric car made it to the finish line while the gas car had to be repaired several times between start and finish.

Perhaps the reason that gas is now superior to batteries is that all the designers were focused on gas. Had those designers and developers been focused on batteries then chances are that the battery technology would be sufficient to our modern needs.

You also might want to read up on electric army tanks. They've experimented with them and they say that the battery models are as good as the diesel engines. What's more, the electric models don't cause earthquake-like tremors, but are quiet enough to actually sneak up on people. So the only reason gas engines are more powerful is because they've been developed over the last century whereas electric cars are making a new comeback. I don't know where you got the idea that they were having trouble making a electric car that would go 65 miles per hour, because it's far from true. It's not about speed anyway it's about serviceability.
