Well, allow me to offer a counterpoint: he has 6 honorary doctorates from pretty prestigious universities (at least 4 of them are doctorate of science degrees), the engineering of the type he did (MarsDial, for instance) would absolutely qualify under the heading of "science", he holds several patents, he is a fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, and he is generally considered a peer by legit astrophysicists like Neil deGrasse Tyson. I'd say he qualifies as really a science guy, even if he didn't start as one way back when.Bill Nye isn't really a science guy, he is an engineer, I was just poking fun at his science angle. I like him thoughhe does have an honorary diploma which is pretty sweet.

In a perfect world it wouldn't matter. But when you have to pick of the phone and call someone in for an interview, all things being equal, are you going to choose the person with the name you can pronounce from the words, or call the guy named Edward?
Blacks without "black sounding names" get called back just as much as everyone else apparently.
I'd say most of the reason for this is apprehension in not knowing what to call the person.
It's also a class thing. White trash are just as apt to name their kid something like Thomasina, or Lavavastar, or Destiny... Names of real white girls I have met who aren't drag queens.
I'm willing to bet white trashy names don't get called back much either.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I think the idea of colorblindness in terms of an ideal for structuring race relations is morally and ethically bankrupt and absolutely ignores the richness and priceless value of different cultures, creeds, histories and ethnicities.
Those small minded enough to discriminate based on color of skin, accent of speech, diety they pray to, partners they choose or other criteria that have nothing to do with character, good works or integrity have my eternal disdain, and pity, for they place themselves in a prison of their own ignorance.

All my life I have been a top fisherman, if I take someone fishing who had never been fishing would we not be peers? As we are both fishermen. Just as bill nye and Tyson are tv guys and therefore peers. Being a peer doesn't mean your equal in the craft nor out of it. I find Tyson to be affable, articulate and I'm willing say he may not be in the top 2/3rds of his astrophysicists peers, He surely is at the top when it comes to tv, As for bill nye he is the peewee herman of science, and they are peers as both have tv shows for kids.
As for myself I don't watch kids tv, and it would be better for you to try to move up yourself.
Bill nye is not and could never be a Neil degrasse Tyson.

Do you have multiple honorary doctorates of neuroscience? Does your surgeon friend call you on stage when giving talks to have you explain concepts of neuroscience to the audience he is speaking to? Are you a fellow of any medical societies? Have you designed medical equipment, and do you hold patents for such?

As they say "those who can do and those who can't teach". You sure ask a lot. My friends who are doctors have real doctorates not some honorary crap given to celebs, that means nothing. They have nothing just as you have nothing.
