Sorry DB but reread my post,You must be mistaken , they arent a reef light and I believe they designed the new models just for our application.
Thank you though, I did pay a visit to their site and it is very neat. Though I don't see the new model you were talking about, I thought you had said that it was in the works earlier on?...but speaks nothing to whats hitting the floor beneath it... unless you are growing coral, intensity may not be a huge thing for aqua. users. Im thinking not since they are using the WW XMLs instead....of something more blue heavy (mono blues for photons...)...
I hope your paying attention Rapid LED, because they just designed your next grow light for you.Great pics thanks digimidgi! Personally I would run that bad boy without the lenses and without the cover. I would also try to reduce the current but I suspect most growers will run with it as is and that is understandable.
Scotch it is confusing I did the same thing. They are keeping the Onyx grow separate from the Onyx which is a reef light.
I agree psuagro, if Onyx used high quality aluminum reflectors like the Hans panel that would be ideal. That would also allow them to spread the panel wider for better coverage, and closer to the canopy for better use of vertical space.
There really is no advantage to using a frosted lens, just use the correct beam angle in the first place and you get the spread you need without the scattering and absorption losses. Mike may be knowledgeable but that doesn't change the laws of physics.
hey Scotch.Sorry DB but reread my post,

Also, here is a little snippit from their site:
"The ONYX has comparable, if not higher, PAR than an AI SOL and a broader color spectrum."
of course I get curious and start looking, the Ai SOL is a Coral LED light, looks like COBs? and wireless controls? lol. But, made for coral.
And:
"ONYX is built to last, looks great, will grow just about any type of coral you put underneath it,... please email [email protected]."
So I guess we were both wrong sir, they are directed towards aquarium use, specifically coral reefs.
Another big give away, like I said earlier, is the heavy amount of blue in their standard/default spectrum.
14 CREE XT-E Royal Blue
8 CREE XP-G Cool White
4 SemiLEDs Violet UV
1 CREE XP-E Green
1 Oslon 660nm Red
EDIT: thank you for the link DB!
Hey no worries. What would you recommend to use for protecting it? I was thinking about ordering a very thin sheet of aluminum and cutting out holes for the LED's and all other raised elements..? that would leave a lot exposed still so probably not worth doing.Great pics thanks digimidgi! Personally I would run that bad boy without the lenses and without the cover.
out of curiosity what is teh problem with leaving things exposed... what sort of damage could possibly occurI have run my panels bare with traces exposed for years and it has never been an issue but you could put kapton tape over parts that you dont want exposed.

Is that Kapton tape you have on your panels? The yellow transparent tape? What distance would you keep the Onyx with the lenses off?I have run my panels bare with traces exposed for years and it has never been an issue but you could put kapton tape over parts that you dont want exposed.

So Mike at Rapid requested link to this thread and I gave it to him.
Hopefully he'll do some talking because I'm sure he knows more about his product than any of us BUT he made it clear in the email to me
customer feedback/ideas are very very important to them and they do listen.
jeff from A51 has an account here...Haha thanks. Like I said, just do your grow and the results will speak for themselves one way or the other. I'll hop on when I get a chance and will say hi or answer any questions, but we're not a sponsor of the forum so I don't like to go and try to push our products on threads unless it's in a sponsor forum. I'm happy to answer questions over email but don't want to make it seem like I'm hawking our goods without paying the site for the right to do that.
Regards,
Mike
Expect some personal posts from Mike in the near future it sounds like.
Happy weekend.
