Onyx or A51?

You must be mistaken , they arent a reef light and I believe they designed the new models just for our application.
Sorry DB but reread my post,

...but speaks nothing to whats hitting the floor beneath it... unless you are growing coral, intensity may not be a huge thing for aqua. users. Im thinking not since they are using the WW XMLs instead....of something more blue heavy (mono blues for photons...)...
Thank you though, I did pay a visit to their site and it is very neat. Though I don't see the new model you were talking about, I thought you had said that it was in the works earlier on?

Also, here is a little snippit from their site:

"The ONYX has comparable, if not higher, PAR than an AI SOL and a broader color spectrum."

of course I get curious and start looking, the Ai SOL is a Coral LED light, looks like COBs? and wireless controls? lol. But, made for coral.

And:

"ONYX is built to last, looks great, will grow just about any type of coral you put underneath it,... please email [email protected]."

So I guess we were both wrong sir, they are directed towards aquarium use, specifically coral reefs.

Another big give away, like I said earlier, is the heavy amount of blue in their standard/default spectrum.

14 CREE XT-E Royal Blue
8 CREE XP-G Cool White
4 SemiLEDs Violet UV
1 CREE XP-E Green
1 Oslon 660nm Red

EDIT: thank you for the link DB!

I've actually got an AI vega hanging right next to the cool white onyx (which I am going to order another of).
the vega can be set to certain colors, weather patterns, clouds, lightning.
but it's a reef light , it's also a reef light that is very controllable with bunches of timers that you can change intensity of individual colors.
I use it mainly for a little extra blue but crank most every other color. Been running a royal blue at night just for the fuck of it. It's set on like 1 percent.
Seems to contain some of the led that some of us grow weed with.
The horticulture models are here.......

Great pics thanks digimidgi! Personally I would run that bad boy without the lenses and without the cover. I would also try to reduce the current but I suspect most growers will run with it as is and that is understandable.

Scotch it is confusing I did the same thing. They are keeping the Onyx grow separate from the Onyx which is a reef light.

I agree psuagro, if Onyx used high quality aluminum reflectors like the Hans panel that would be ideal. That would also allow them to spread the panel wider for better coverage, and closer to the canopy for better use of vertical space.

There really is no advantage to using a frosted lens, just use the correct beam angle in the first place and you get the spread you need without the scattering and absorption losses. Mike may be knowledgeable but that doesn't change the laws of physics.

I hope your paying attention Rapid LED, because they just designed your next grow light for you.

Hey no worries. What would you recommend to use for protecting it? I was thinking about ordering a very thin sheet of aluminum and cutting out holes for the LED's and all other raised elements..? that would leave a lot exposed still so probably not worth doing.
What about some sort of shrink wrap?

I have run my panels bare with traces exposed for years and it has never been an issue but you could put kapton tape over parts that you dont want exposed.

I don't know about you guys, but I can see the makings of great panels in the near future. RapidLED must have noticed that a bunch of their customers don't own coral. If they improve on their first version, and clearly market them as grow lights, the second and third versions could be the real thing.

It seems to me that a lot of growers would get a kick out of having a dimmable panel along with the ability to fine-tune the veg/bloom spectrum. RapidLED shows us that's possible. All's it would take is for someone to combine the right LED's with a controller like that. AFAIK all we have in the grow LED world is on/off switches.

Both lumigrow and the advanced xml series have dimmable control knobs on them. Probably others as well. I really liked that feature on my xml

I put it on my DIY light. Dimmers kick ass...so incredibly useful to dial in how much power you want to run. Personally I'd never build a light without one..

So Mike at Rapid requested link to this thread and I gave it to him.
Hopefully he'll do some talking because I'm sure he knows more about his product than any of us BUT he made it clear in the email to me
customer feedback/ideas are very very important to them and they do listen.

awesome... on both parts... that he wants to see this thread and that he wants feedback... its a plus/plus for him and for us...

I dont think from the start people have disputed what he knows... I think its, and as I've stated before, a natural urge to question something different... and diffused lenses are something that no one else has done and something that none of the reputable companies have decided to use.
if you speak to him again please tell him to come here and have a chat...I think it can only be a good thing...

Haha thanks. Like I said, just do your grow and the results will speak for themselves one way or the other. I'll hop on when I get a chance and will say hi or answer any questions, but we're not a sponsor of the forum so I don't like to go and try to push our products on threads unless it's in a sponsor forum. I'm happy to answer questions over email but don't want to make it seem like I'm hawking our goods without paying the site for the right to do that.

Regards,
Mike

Expect some personal posts from Mike in the near future it sounds like.
Happy weekend.
