He's obviously a racist cunt, sack him. He was appalled at being invited to work the fields in Nebraska and associated this work with African American slaves.
White tears from bills fans, doesn't look so cool smoking pot on air when you know he's a racist
Dude he's not a racist, don't let the PC pity party ruin your mind.

We've idiots marching for "free speech" (ie freedom to hate/legally discriminate); a joke (an admittedly poorly thought out one) where he didnt even denigrate anyone is nothing compared to that.

Plus Bill likes mocha too, he's had black girlfriends and everything.

It came across double racist, that he associates working in fields with African American slaves, no fault of their own, and he calls them the name the oppressive slave owners denigrated them with, but I didn't know he drinks mocha so I'll give him a pass

It was essentially a historical reference.

"Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it".

Is it anti-Semetic to discuss the Holocaust including words that the Germans used to describe Jews? Or is it highlighting an important part of history?

It's different, this was not an objective ironic history lesson it was the spew from the suppressed unconscious, a Freudian slip. He is not African American so why does he think it's ok to use the word as he can't claim irony or appropriation, in fact this makes his comment even more racist. His ancestors didn't get beaten and chained and raped burned and murdered because they had quiff hairstyles

Em...you know he's Jewish...right?

They never got beaten and chained and raped burned and murdered or anything.

Appropriation? Seriously?

No I didn't know, he should know better than to make such remarks
He should have known that SOMEONE would be offended, thats the only way I see the comment being "unwise".

This is like when black comedians say "crackers", they're describing a stereotype in a satirical way to make a point or illicit a reaction.

I don't think that's correct. When he interviewed his Mother and Sister in Religulous I think they said they were Catholic. I don't remember him ever saying anything about being Jewish either.

He's not practicing, correct, but his mom was a Hungarian Jew and his father Roman Catholic.

Maher was born in Manhattan, New York City. His father, William Aloysius Maher, Jr.,[1] was a network news editor and radio announcer, and his mother, Julie (Berman) Maher, was a nurse.[2] He was raised in his Irish-American father's Roman Catholic religion. Until his early teens, he was unaware that his mother, whose family was from Hungary,[10] was Jewish.[11][12][13] Owing to his disagreement with the Catholic Church's doctrine about birth control, Maher's father stopped taking Maher and his sister to Catholic church services when Maher was thirteen.[14]

Maher is highly critical of all religion and views it as highly destructive. He has been described, or self-identified, variously as an agnostic, atheist, and apatheist, while objecting to having his views defined by a single label. In his 2008 feature film Religulous, he refers to himself as agnostic.

He killed on the Tonight Show (Carson era) with a joke about this. Something about always taking his lawyer with him to confession.

The chairwoman of Black Lives Matter had a lapse in judgement. Bill Maher is not her enemy and she's ignoring context.
That's one of the most important angles to this whole thing, imo. Why are liberals/progressives fighting liberals/progressives for things they've said that has been taken out of context? Maher's entire career has been in support of left wing policies, everyone knows he's a liberal. Why would any liberal or progressive group take offense to anything he has to say?

This is the segment of the far left that is out of control when it comes to freedom of speech. They're unwilling to hold a dialogue, they simply want Maher fired, they want to shut him up.

That's embarrassing. As a progressive, I welcome all contenders to the table. You show up with your dumbass idea and try to beat me. I welcome the challenge because I know I will be able to convince more people of my idea than your dumbass idea. When we both show up and I tell people your idea is too dumb or too dangerous to even be heard or discussed, I've already lost. It's not my job to make that decision. It's my job to expose your idea for how dumb or dangerous I think it is and it's up to the people to reach their own conclusions about it.
