I do a lot of thrift store shopping. Since I work nights and weekends, I have my days. It takes time, but you can get good deals. The church run stores are almost always cheaper than Goodwill, but they don't have the selection, and they are not open late when working folks would have to go. With Goodwill you have to be discriminating. Paying 5 bucks for a $46 Ex Officio shirt is a good deal. Paying 5 bucks for a $10 Walmart shirt, not so good. I've found 20 degree down bags for 10 bucks. You just have to put in the time and look.

I think you've hit the nail on the head Larry. Chances are, you're already earning a living wage, you're just using it wrong. Paying interest is the "I can't wait" tax levied on those with no self-control. Stop using debt and watch your effective income increase by about 30%. Stop having a cell phone so new you don't even know how to use it and suddenly food is more affordable. But of course, you aren't as cool. Rich, but not cool.

Dave lost me when he opined about there are the deserving poor and then there are the poor in the US. Fuck him. Evangelist Christians live about as far away from the teachings in the bible as anybody can.

the difference- choice..you choose it. not everyone wants to shop at goodwill or church stores..didn't you say you are a two income family? you look for that one cool cheap hip item..some have nothing but..walmart is cheaper all around for new items..cheaper than the used of goodwill.

wrong..what happens if your shitty job is $7.25/hour? I get it..you're expected to get the 2nd and 3rd job now. the us government recognizes that it costs $29k to survive/put a roof over your head in America. it doesn't include transportation, clothing or other necessities like health insurance in it's estimate..we are talking A ROOF.
