Window sill grow

Northern Light auto now potted up. Just in the nick of time, because the roots were already poking through the paper pot. I sprinkled some mycorrhizal granules in the place where the seedling went into the new fabric pot. Just managed to squeeze a 7.5 litre square pot on the windowsill, which should allow a decent root system to develop. Now it just needs to grow for a week or two and I'll begin the LST...

The second grow, Northern Light Auto, has reached day 15 (11 since sprout). Not much sun today, but the wee seedling seems to be enjoying all this new soil to spread roots into.

Day 112 (107 since sprouting).

This plant is finally starting to finish the recent growth spurt. The white pistils at the tips of many buds are beginning to fade and go brown. Fan leaves continue to yellow and die off. Will keep an eye on it but probably going to chop this week sometime.

she is looking so much better than last week, as I don't see any white hairs now

you are looking close to being ready, but it always better to wait a bit longer than you think, as you want those red hairs to reside into the buds

bottom line....looking really good

Thanks! The white pistils are confined to the very tops of only about half the bud sites now. Seems to be ripening quite fast. Will wait until all the white has gone before flushing, then harvest, maybe in about a week or so.

Day 119 since this seed hit the soil! Slightly less dramatic 114 days since sprouting.

The sun disappeared several days ago, hidden behind thick clouds and torrential rain. Which probably slowed down the ripening of this wee window sill wonder. One thing is for sure, new growth in the buds has finished. The few remaining white pistils are now starting to turn golden brown. There are fewer fan leaves left, I removed a bunch of them at the weekend as they were going crispy and had lost their green. Those that cling to the buds are continuing to yellow and die off.

I will finally be chopping this plant in a few days' time. Farewell, window sill companion!

Nirvana Northern Light Auto has reached Day 22 from the seed being planted (Day 18 from sprout).

The lack of sunshine over the past few days has led to this wee plant stretching quite a bit. It's currently 10cm high. I have to rotate it every couple of days as it leans over towards the window, praying to the the light. Otherwise looking really healthy. No feed added, just water as there's loads of nutrients in the soil. I will be starting LST on this one soon, just waiting for it to get a bit taller, and an extra set of leaves or two to show. Maybe in a few days.

Incredibly, a handful of smaller buds on the RQS Quick One have produced new white pistils, one has a thick clump of them. Will have to see how they develop but still on course to harvest within the next week.

Day 119 (114 from sprout) for the first grow.

Looked at the weather forecast. Cloud, rain, more cloud, more rain for the foreseeable. Did not see any point in prolonging this grow with no sunny days to ripen the last two wee buds that still had a few white pistils at the their tops.

So I chopped the plant just now. No real fan leaves to remove, though the buds themselves are very leafy so trimmed a few of the yellower close in fan/sugar leaves but just left the rest on the buds. Picture of the resulting crop below, with secateurs and trim scissors for scale.

The cabinet is busy with another grow, so into the drying box with the buds. They will hang there until dry, when they'll be removed from branches to jars to cure. No idea what the weight will be, but enough to keep me going for a while I should think. Altogether the three plants planted back in March have given a decent yield in the end. :)

In other news, started LST on the Nirvana Northern Light Auto. This is day 25 (21 from sprout) and the plant is 20cm tall, having stretched quite a bit in the past week, with overcast weather, rain and little sunshine.

I used a couple of gardening staples, one to brace the stem against, and one to bend the top of the plant over. Unfortunately I may have overdone it with the bending, there's now a severe bend near the base of the stem. Hopefully the plant will recover okay from this. The top of the plant is now facing away from the window. The idea is the top leaves will start growing towards the light, and give me some more stem to bend in another direction later.

Before and after shots below.

Nirvana Northern Light Auto has hit Day 29 yesterday (25 from sprout).

All seems healthy enough. The stem which was "super cropped" appears to have healed up nicely. Maybe some very slight signs of a knuckle at the bend. The main node curled upwards searching for the light, and its leaves have spread out quite a bit. This seems to have slowed the development of additional nodes further down the stem. So I decided it was time to train this plant again, bending the top nodes down to the side. Assuming all goes to plan then the stem will end up in a sort of spiral pattern, hopefully with nodes branching off which will turn into bud sites. Currently looks more like a game of croquet or something.
:)
This strain reportedly grows to over a metre high without training, so reckon the LST is essential. Before and after shots below.

Yesterday Nirvana Northern Light Auto plant reached Day 43 (39 days since sprout). Steady growth has meant I continued to pin down the main cola, encouraging other nodes to stretch upwards. Working reasonably well so far. The plant has entered the pre-flowering stage, with a few white pistils showing, mostly on the main cola. I gave the first feed a couple of days ago, some half strength Miracle Gro.

I turned the plant around one quarter today so that the leaves and stems will start to grow in a different direction. Still aiming for the "spiral" form, but as you can see a secondary stem stretched quite a lot and had to be kept low too. As long as multiple bud sites develop and get more light, and the plant stays fairly short, I'll be happy.

This strain is advertised as taking around 110 days from seed to harvest, we shall see as by then we'll be heading into autumn and the days will get shorter and the temperatures cooler. Good that it's been vegging in the warm summer sunshine though.

Nirvana Northern Light Auto plant has reached Day 50 (46 days since sprout). The plant is well into flower now, so the only LST I performed was on a couple of branches which had stretched, and I wanted them in a different place. I have not achieved a spiral form, more of an umbrella handle shape, with various long branches shooting off in different directions. The plant has been sitting side on to the sun all week, and has today been turned to face in the opposite direction. Also gave it a feed with Miracle Gro at less than half strength today. I am pretty much done with LST now and will just let this one stretch as it likes.

Nirvana Northern Light Auto plant has reached Day 57 (53 days since sprout). Not much to report, the wee plant continues to grow, the flowers add more pistils, the bud sites continue to develop, she's healthy. One possibly noteworthy detail is the branching structure for nodes, where there's a kind of zig-zag vertical offset between nodes and buds. Haven't seen that before, it is common to all the branches on this plant. I'm still feeding with Miracle Gro once a week, maybe next cycle I shall switch to tomato feed. She's been side on to the window this week, has now been turned around so the opposite side faces the window - this helps to even out growth and stretch, keeping the branches fairly vertical.

By my estimation the plant is about halfway through its lifespan, maybe it will keep going longer than 120 days due to the window location, we shall see. By early October conditions will not be so favourable - daylight and warmth will be in relatively short supply. Will be interesting to see if shorter days accelerate bud ripening or not.

Nirvana Northern Light Auto plant has reached Day 71 (67 days since sprout). The wee plant has stretched a bit more, and the buds continue to add bulk and sugar leaves. While my earlier efforts at LST have succeeded in keeping the main cola short (possibly a bit too short) it still has the most bud sites. The stems are quite thick now at the base of the plant, while a few branches are still rather spindly further up. Weather has been mixed the past week, some sun but also cloudy and rainy days. Still the plant seems healthy enough. I give just plain water mostly, with some tomato feed around once a week. I turn the plant once per week, so the main cola is now away from the window, and other buds will get more sun over the coming week.

From here on, reckon it's just waiting for buds to ripen and judging when to chop. Some weeks off yet of course, but I don't want to leave it too long like the last grow, where some lower calyxes on buds were dying off before the top ones were fully ready. Will try to harvest a touch earlier with this plant if conditions allow.

your crop is looking good but you need at least another 2 or 3 weeks to finish properly....trust me, you won't regret taking the extra time

Oh yeah, it's still early days. Definitely let the first grow go on too long though, maybe by a week or two. By the looks of this plant, at least three weeks still to go, but then I'll be watching like a hawk. :D
