Russia Detains Former Separatist Ukraine Commander

Russian army veteran and ex-FSB officer Igor Girkin has been detained, his wife and the RBC business daily’s sources said Friday.
Girkin, who helped Moscow annex Crimea in 2014 and then organized pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine, was detained by law enforcement officers around 11:30 a.m. Moscow time, his wife Miroslava Reginskaya said on his Telegram channel.

According to the RBC business daily, the detention came after a complaint from a former member of the Wagner mercenary outfit, which Girkin had criticized in the past.

Public court records show that Girkin is being charged with “public incitement of extremist activity,” which is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Investigators have requested that he be placed in pretrial detention, state news agencies reported.
Girkin has been a hawkish pro-war voice since the invasion of Ukraine last year, regularly criticizing President Vladimir Putin and the Defense Ministry for not doing enough to achieve victory.

“I guess they [Kremlin leadership] got f***ing annoyed with him... pardon my French,” a Kremlin official told The Moscow Times on condition of anonymity.

His arrest comes three days after he called on Putin to step down.
“The country will not survive another six years of this cowardly mediocrity in power,” Girkin wrote to his more than 800,000 subscribers on the Telegram messaging app Tuesday.

“He lost his sense of danger at some point, somehow believing he could say anything he wanted. But no one is allowed to do that here now,” another insider told The Moscow Times.

According to Russian political expert Tatiana Stanovaya, Girkin's arrest “undeniably serves the interests” of Russia’s Defense Ministry.
“This is a moment many within the siloviki have eagerly awaited. Strelkov had overstepped all conceivable boundaries a long time ago, sparking the desire among security forces — from the FSB to military chiefs — to apprehend him,” Stanovaya wrote in a Telegram post.
“It's unlikely that there will be massive repressions against 'angry patriots,' but the most vehement dissenters may face prosecution, serving as a cautionary tale for others,” she added.

Girkin was sentenced to life in prison in absentia by a court in The Hague in November 2022 for the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine in 2014, killing 298 people.

Did not bother posting this earlier but since it is still here maybe give the other side a few words to say. Forgot the link.

Putin warned NATO against the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned the United States and its NATO allies Poland and Lithuania against attempts to escalate the Ukrainian conflict. He made it clear that Russia's response would follow immediately. And it is possible that this will be a nuclear response, experts comment on Putin's statement at the beginning of the operational meeting with the permanent members of the Security Council on July 21. Analysts believe that the Russian leader tried to save the Polish and Lithuanian elites from rash steps.

The public part of the weekly meeting of the Security Council this time turned out to be longer than usual. President Putin gave the floor to the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation, Sergei Naryshkin. It was about new threats that have arisen in the Ukrainian direction. According to Naryshkin , the Polish elites are increasingly aware that the Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot resist the Russian army, and "the defeat of Ukraine is a matter of time." “In this regard, the Polish leadership is intensifying its mood to maintain control in the western territories of Ukraine, the western regions, by deploying its troops there,” Naryshkin said.

Ukraine placed an embargo in the Black Sea against Russia today. What can Russia do about i? Declare war on Ukraine? Putin's nuclear threats have been empty until now, will things be different this time?

It just keeps getting worse for Putin.

Ukraine has been slowly and methodically advancing through their outer defenses in several locations and are almost through the bulk of the mine fields while baiting Russian artillery and destroying it with counter battery radars and drones whenever they fire on the troops clearing the way. Soon they will be through enough of it to breakthrough into the Russian rear.

Ukraine's counteroffensive - highly anticipated for many months - is going slower than some had hoped.

What's the latest on the frontlines, and could things be about to change?

They use the precision munitions on these things, wipe out their guns and wipe out their counter battery radars. Attack the trenches in front of the minefields with drones to protect the people clearing the mines, keep methodically chewing through their defenses until they breakthrough with a minimum of causalities. Attack Russian logistics and C&C as far back as you can to starve the front of munitions and food while you do it, wear them down.
