Having a healthy domestic drone and RC hobby market is a good idea for several reasons, recruitment of pilots for manned aircraft and drones among them, as well as for technically orientated and even trained people. Small drones have become important for close air support in their own right and high-tech UAV platforms are essential to modern warfare.

Anybody can download the DRL simulator and if you do well in the online competitions you will be invited to race for real, so real experience is essential, though the sims are pretty good. It is a merit-based system, everybody flies the same kind of standard drone, skill and sometimes luck are the deciding factors. There are other drone racing leagues that are open about equipment etc, but this is the biggest commercial one where skill alone is the criteria for qualifying and wining.

They don't seem to have the simulator I can just download and play on my own on my PC or phone without getting an account. Sure wish DJI had a sim I could use for rainy day practise but they got nothing like that the pricks. Nice night tho so might as well go burn a battery for some real world practice.

Doesn't support my model, the Mini 3 Pro. I could use it flying with the keyboard but what myself and others at the web forum want is one that runs on the controller so it's as close to real as you can get. I want to be looking at the same screen as when I'm flying the drone using the same controller.

Went out and made a short video of mama duck and her 7 babies swimming and diving in my dugout. Damn battery was toast in 24 min so trying the other battery tomorrow and see how long it lasts. Suppose to go for up to 34 or 37 min and I was just hovering and slowly moving around the dugout 2m up looking for one of my 3 trout. Haven't scanned the pics on my PC yet so might have pics of a couple. Hard to tell on the phone screen.

With FPV drones there are many different simulators, there are a couple of assisted flight modes, but it is pretty much completely manual. Everybody flies FPV in rate, or acro mode, or is told to learn to, it is completely manual, and it is hard to even hover, not like flying a DJI which you kinda remote control. I hook up my standard RC flight transmitter via USB and could use googles too, but nobody does, the idea being to build those physical skills like riding a bike or swimming, a kind of learning you don't forget, but it takes practice and experience. After a time, you are unconscious of the controller in your hands and are immersed in the visual experience, you don't think about driving your car, you just drive it.

Here is my first run on an FPV sim after some experience breaking drones and repairing them, but FPV drones are made to be crashed and repaired by the owner, with tough carbon fiber frames and cheap parts to stick on it.

Now that would be great if I could be using my actual controller to do that with. Pissed at DJI because they don't bother putting out a sim I can use with my setup.

Oh well, just my first drone and if I do get into it further I'll know what to be looking for when I move on up. So far I haven't had to replace any props so that's a good thing. :)

Have a look, some other FPV or RC flight sims, they might let you use the DJI controller, most have a free version to try. DJI drones have auto leveling, and altitude hold and GPS location hold, if you take your hands off the controller so not much simulation is required. The cheapest way to fly FPV is to build or buy a wing, a kit with motor, prop and two servos cost about $30 CDN. Wing racing is popular with the older guys and is cheap, so people bring several and just unplug the receiver from one and move it to another wing. You can make a wing from dollar store foam board and a kit for real cheap.

Wings can be simple, or they can be like this, the FT spear and there are plans and videos free online on how to build one. A nice winter bench project that is cheap and these things can land in the snow as well as on the grass. The propulsion system of a motor and a 7" prop costs around $20 CDN, but it requires an RC controller/transmitter and a matching receiver ($20) servos cost $2 each and a 10 pack can be bought cheap. If you want a flight controller and GPS add $100 and a bit of tech learning. You can transfer the electronics, especially from plane to plane and build a lot of different foam board designs using crazy glue and hot glue. A great bench project for those who like to use their hands and for older guys. Cheap shit from China and new materials makes building your own planes cheap and easy these days, it used to be balsa wood and doped tissue paper. Now you can laminate your foam board creation with 2" packing tape to greatly increase its strength and aerodynamics. They even make RC planes from cardboard or old pizza boxes FFS!

A very different prospective from a career officer in the military.

Who's right? Time will tell.
3:30 and I already have my level of BS full. 4:18, Biden was wrong to leave Afghanistan when he did, he should have left in the winter. But Trump laid out the timeline to leave in his negotiations with the Taliban. He says that the military did not believe that they will get out for years, ignoring the fact that Trump negotiated the US leaving with a hard date. 9:30, blaming the US for fomenting a coup in Ukraine with no proof. No little green men in Donetsk and Luhansk as the start of the war there. Might as well ask Ritter in Russia his opinion. Or Musk.

Refers to Zelensky and his cronies, wonder where his allegiances lie? So what does Mac say? That Zelensky will use long range weapons from England to hit Russia to provoke Putin and get Nato into the war. Nato is a Titanic, no idea why Sweden wants to join it. No economic effect on Russia, actually 2% growth? Yeah right. Says there are up to 750k Russians in Ukraine soon to be 1.2M. Russia has everything to win the war in terms of hardware (with 50 year old tanks). Then he says Lithuania and Poland are trying to regain land from Ukraine? He says only the weak want to use nukes and that Russia is not weak, but the West being weak might use them.

Douglas Macgregor is a Russian stooge and traitor; I'm surprised he hasn't been recalled into the service so they could court martial him. He constantly spouts Russian propaganda and disinformation, only a fool or useful idiot would believe him.

Are you implying that anyone with a different opinion about the war in Ukraine is a traitor?

I think Ukraine is losing. I think it's been a massive and terrible misadventure for the United States and NATO at every stage. I think we should find a way to end hostilities as soon as possible. I think that a strategy of weakening Russia is not just a fool's errand but it makes no sense unless you're a confirmed American imperialist warmonger.

Ultimately, America is going to see the same end result from Ukraine as we did from Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen etc. In other words, the expenditure of hundreds of billions (or trillions) of dollars, the needless deaths of thousands (cumulatively millions) of innocent civilians, and a loss of influence and credibility in world affairs. Not that America seems to care about any of those things.

Did Russia do a bad thing by invading? The knee jerk political acceptable answer is, "of course!" but that conveniently fails to consider the situation from the Russian side- and that's another problem with American foreign policy; we don't give a shit about the people involved. If we did, we wouldn't be so comfortable seeing them die in such incredible numbers.

Did Russia have any other choice? Many people with a lot of experience in military and foreign affairs say that the policies of the United States in the region have been calculated to force a conflict just like the one currently in progress.

No one thinks that America "succeeded" in Iraq or Afghanistan or the many other countries I listed above. I think time will make it clear that what we've done in Ukraine to be similarly misguided.

Here's my final thought on this; America apparently does not care about cost, consequences or harms done in any of the ways we've fought around the world over the last half century. Then why do we keep doing it? Couldn't those trillions of dollars have been far better spent on America and Americans? We're a late stage empire that refuses to learn from history. What comes next is pretty clear unless we make some very serious changes of the kind I don't see either mainstream political party being capable of leading.

So those who don't toe the party line and obediently spout the official narrative are traitors by definition?

That's as authoritarian a thing as I've ever heard and it's pretty disgusting coming from an American in a pot forum.

We have the right to free speech and that includes dissent. Colonel Macgregor has done nothing traitorous; he's calling this war like he sees it and I think he's a lot closer to the facts than CNN or the Washington Post.

In fact, I think the "official narrative" along with the ever increasing tide of calls for censorship are exactly what's gone wrong with America. If we can't handle an open debate without logging our minds then we truly are lost.

Now you forget about the Ukrainian people. If Mexico invaded the US and took over the bottom third of it would you not fight for your country? Do you think you should just have talks with them and give them Florida to California?

You do realize Russia invaded Georgia in the same way as it had in Ukraine? Same with the Chechen Republic.

Wait, he is giving the Russian narative, the same one given to the Russian people who can be arrested for holding up a blank sheet of paper? Russians who are lied to by their daily news?
