This guy has a 90% approval rating and Zelensky has a 60 to 70% popularity rating, and this guy is gonna retire from the army... For Vlad it will mean one clever Devil, or another will finish him off after the election.

Zelensky fires Ukraine’s military chief in major shakeup nearly two years into war
Are you judging Zelensky's firing of a general using approval ratings?

Nope, just assessing the political risk of doing so with him running against Zelensky in an upcoming election. Growing up the General wanted to be a comedian, maybe he wants to be president too. This guy is about the only person who could run against Zelensky and win, hence the popularity numbers.

I once had a friend who would rather say something foolish than think.

He is the only one who could beat Zelensky in an election, try dealing with that fact first.
I'm still musing on the foolish notion that approval polls, especially two high approval ratings, are predictive of election results or have value in discussing the political implications of Zelensky firing the general in charge of the military's response. I would think that the effectiveness of the general Zelensky chooses to replace him would be more important than some goofy polls.

FYI, I'm biased against the trend these day to cite polling numbers as if they mean anything more than how people feel at the moment. But you do you, babe.

Pundits more familiar with the situation than me have been speculating on this, the general announced he would retire and that would be the first step in a liberal democracy to running for political office. Several parties would be as eager to scoop him up like the republicans did with Eisenhower and tried with McArthur before him. He is a popular war hero and so far, out polls Zelensky, but he is a patriot and will not divide the nation in a time of war and elections have been suspended for a while. He might be an even worse alternative for Putin than Zelensky, both are good choices and men from what I can see, and both did a good job against impossible odds. We will see, but Zelensky recognizes the political danger and is offering him another job, there is plenty he could do and probably will.

Disagreement over warfare as a reason for dismissal? | DW News

Almost two years after the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Ukrainian armed forces, Valery Salushnyi, has been relieved of his post. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on Thursday in his evening video message in Kiev. Colonel General Olexander Syrskyj was appointed as his successor, the previous commander of the Ukrainian land forces.

Under Salushnyj's leadership, the Ukrainian troops withstood the Russian invasion in February 2022. Over the course of the first year of the war, they even recaptured occupied parts of the Kharkiv region and the regional capital Kherson in the south. Salushnyi was also the architect of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the summer of 2023, which, however, made little progress against heavily fortified Russian defences.
