Well lets see...my dogs have someone to feed them, give them water, give them a bath, show them affection, buy them toys to play with. They also have someone to clean up their crap and piss when they can't get outside and they get to lay around all day and watch Animal Planet while I go to work to keep a roof over their heads sooooooo who is smarter than who????
you could be talking about my teenage daughter.......

That's only because people have held canines as prisoners for a few thousands of years and have bred them to not be able to take care of themselves. This is something we did to them. It certainly wasn't their choice.

HEy TBT,

Right now my cat is communicating his desire to go into the back yard, that meow sounds different from "I'm hungy" or "I'm mad" or "I'm sad" or "I'm freaked out by something". Animals have definite means of communication, you just have to be sapient enough to understand them.

I can look right at all of my pets and know exactly how they are feeling without them having to write me a note. I think you're less sapient than them, you can't get it unless someone draws you a map.

I know it wasn't their fault, but like you stated...I to can look at my 2 taco Bell dogs and tell what they want,if they don't feel good or if they feel happy or sad by there eyes and facial expressions.....I hold my 2 pups in higher regard than some people I have come to know....Wouldn't trade em for the world.

I've rescued all of my pets.
I have no doubt I would drive over a crowd of people before I seen any harm come to my pets.

a friends mother died and the family was going to put her old tom cat 'asleep.'
I was like, fuck that noise! I never wanted a cat, I was raised with dogs, but I took him in.

soon after, I went anti cruelty and picked him up a girlfriend.....

about a yr later I took in 3 ferrets after hearing about a ferret farm being shut down on television

a so-called friend bought a snake and when I found out that he feed him mice and geribles, got pissed and pulled this gerible out of the snakes cage(also made a few threats) I've had george the gerible and haven spoken to that asshole ever since.

I'm not going to repeat myself, again in trying to explain the difference between awareness and self-awareness, I'm getting sick of trying to solve the circular logic error created by Sentience != Sapience when it comes to trying to explain that they are two different things (now that I've gotten pass the my.Sentience != your.Sentience.)

(Sorry, != for those that don't program is Not Equals)

As far as me and pets, don't have any, I wouldn't be able to be responsible enough to prevent them from suffering, such as them running out of food while I'm on vacation (I really would rather not have to trust some one else with my responsibilities.) or stuck at work (esp. if its unplanned due to a user error causing me to have to stay in the office later than planned.)

I can prove your cat isn't sapient because it can't write, read, or communicate.

Of course, considering the fact that it has tricked you into being its slave merely for the privilege of calling it your cat, perhaps that does say something about their intelligence.
The use of reading and writing as a way to determine sepience would leave out alot of homo-sapiens, so you know that will not work.

As for communicating, all animals do it, even at a cellular level you will communication between cells.and cell groupings electric and chemical.

I agree that animals are not the equal of humans but you will find that the line is hard to define in a simple way or by using biology.

I also think you are right for being responsible and not gitting a pet a lot of people have kids when they aren't even up to the task of taking care of a pet.

you don't have to repeat yourself. You could simply attack the argument from a different angle. or maybe use the mirror test as proof.

How do you know, man?
That's not self-aware that's just aware.

There's a difference, Miss.
Exactly.
Are you saying that my neighbor isn't self aware? I already knew that. He just likes to polish his guns.

As for the dog, how do you know he's not self aware? Just because he doesn't speak English? He certainly understands English. Today he thought he was going out for a walk when I meant out into the back yard. As soon as he saw the door open instead of the leash in my hand he stopped, and his head dropped and he stared at the floor for a moment and then heaved a big sigh and went back into the living room. He didn't get what he wanted so he decided to not participate at all.

That sounds pretty self aware to me.
So, you're basing your assumption that animals have no sentience on things that only apply to humans? If you were to reverse that, and say that sentience was defined, for example, by cat behavior, you wouldn't register, either.Animals do not have the same goals as we do...because they're different. So trying to judge them by human standards won't determine anything but the fact they aren't human. Have you ever owned a cat? They are each and every one, individuals. And if they don't want to stay with you, they will find a way to leave. I had cats go feral before, not because they were mistreated, but because they were independant and preferred to live on their own.The certainly didn't need me. I've rescued cats, for example, my siamese. He was born in the wild, and was a few months old when I caught him. I had to build a relationship with him, slowly, earning his trust, and he chose me as his person. He rarely tolerates the other family members petting him,and they NEVER get to hold him like I do. He's my friend.I don't own him. I let him outside at night to roam from time to time...he CHOOSES to come back because he wants to. If he didn't want to, he would not. He hasn't tricked me,I love him and I enjoy doing things for him. He can go out and hunt for food, but I also feed him because I want to. I doctor him and groom him because I want to, and he lets me do it. I'm an animal too, just like him. But we have a mutual friendship going on,and the fact that he has chosen to stay with me makes me feel good.He doesn't need me to survive.

I rescued a lot of cats down here, with my own money and time, and tried to get them good homes, because they shoot them if they don't have a collar when they're outside.(Well, they used to, I think I scared them.)Pets, as we call them, are really just friends of another species. And if you are good to them, they are the most loving, loyal beings in the world.I couldn't imagine not having them.

Lol!My siamese is like my little enforcer...if I tell one of the other cats to get down or quit it, he'll run over and bitch slap them.

Ferrets are funny little bastards. My sister owned a few and this one would open the cabinet, tear into the sack of potatoes and roll them one by one underneath the couch.

It was a great mystery where all the potatoes were going until we found about a dozen under the sofa. He also raided my socks.

I can't find the video, but on A merica's funniest home videos a long time back, some folks were missing cookies from their cookie jar, so they set up a hidden camera to figure out who was stealing them...and they caught this little mouse on tape, using his front paws to start unscrewing the lid, then he got on the lid and ran just like it was a mouse wheel and opened the jar. Smart mouse. They killed him.

Reaction to Stimulus is not awareness.

Next thing you know is that all the PETA members are going to come out against killing plants, too.
