Slavery was an after thought that was used primarily to keep the British from supplying the Confederacy. Of course now, after the fact, the victorious North justifies it's actions by taking the moral high ground. Something like 96% of the South didn't own any slaves. So, why would 96% of the population fight and die for less than 4%? It doesn't make sense! Now looking at it monetarily, Lincoln threatening to raise taxes on exports from the South which would bankrupt the entire South and leave them in complete ruins, it kinda makes more sense why so many decided to fight.

But I suppose opinions are like assholes, best kept to one's self. At the end of the day, we're all going to believe whatever we want to anyway, so what sense is it to argue over something like this? It happened, it was horrible, let's make sure it doesn't happen again, end of discussion.

On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States -- an event that outraged southern states. The Republican party had run on an anti-slavery platform, and many southerners felt that there was no longer a place for them in the Union. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded. By February 1, 1861, six more states -- Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas -- had split from the Union. The seceded states created the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis, a Mississippi Senator, as their provisional president.
In his inaugural address, delivered on March 4, 1861, Lincoln proclaimed that it was his duty to maintain the Union. He also declared that he had no intention of ending slavery where it existed, or of repealing the Fugitive Slave Law -- a position that horrified African Americans and their white allies. Lincoln's statement, however, did not satisfy the Confederacy, and on April 12 they attacked Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold in Charleston, South Carolina. Federal troops returned the fire. it was the war over northern aggression , the south claimed the rich north eastern states were price fixing cotton and all other resources from the south

TY Wordz ....... Lincoln put the "spin" on the war in 1863. Things weren't going too well, and ppl in the North were getting very fed up with the entire affair.
When Lincoln announced the draft, NYC rioted....this was immediately following Gettysburg.....and the main police and militia were still IN Gettysburg. The angry crowds burned down buildings and lynched black ppl on lamposts .... in NYC ....in 1863.

Lincoln never said in the beginning that he wanted to stop slavery only the expansion of it...The south was like we can keep it and EXPAND it ...that's what started it...Now once the war got going Lincoln was like hell we need to say we going to stop slavery all together ( in order to win the war )....

The republican platform in 1860 was against expansion of slavery,supported a stronger federal government,and high tariffs...The South which was Democratic supported states rights, slavery, and low tariffs. These are the three reason as to why the Civil War started...Now looking at the one that sticks out the most would be slavery.
Other than slavery being abolished, and racism not being accepted in general society, (which is a very good thing imho) not much has changed here in the south since those times. The people are still every bit as rebellious at heart, as they were way back then, and still pretty much live the way they want too, regardless of what the established governments "laws" might be. The south is still a separate entity from the US, in many peoples minds here, and always will be.
While I can't say that I agree totally with everyone here, and their points of view (especially anything racist), I can identify with their wanting to rise up against, and fight a government entity which feels the need to fabricate, and force their own ideas of how life should be lived, onto the people. Because, in their eyes, If you are not willing to become a mindless unthinking drone like the rest of the sheep, which make up the mass of people in this place we call "America", and play along with this "American Dream" they have so conveniently set up for you, you are more use to them locked up in a cell.
For the people who live here in the south, the Confederate Flag has nothing to do with hate or racism, it has everything to do with freedom, and rebellion against an unjust government, and will always fly free and proud here in the south. We are still here, we still love this great land, and even up until the last breath we take, they will never take our freedom from us.
