I am glad to hear someone else loves those smoke bushes! Very beautiful plants! I was laughing when you mentioned the japanese maple as well, because I have my eye on both of them, while redoing my backyard. Good luck with both of your gardens!
i've had my "friend the landscaper" on the lookout for a smoke bush since i got the rooter pots. she keeps finding a purple bush that LOOKS like it but isn't (not sure what it is, it has clusters of small white flowers and similar leaves but no 'smoke').
next time i go to mom's i'm SO putting one on her maple. she's supposed to be rooting some hydraengeas for me too. methinks these 'rooter pot' thingies are going to save me a LOT of money in the longrun ($100+ for the tiniest (but really pretty-leaved) acers! wtf?!)

whatcha doin' to your backyard?

hey well my pet rock died or i think it did it just lays there and does nothing
any advice ?
idk maybe you yelled at it too much and it up and died. or maybe it's just sulking. my sedum certainly does. it's doing it right now, in fact.

wow they all look so good, nice work.
did you release the lady bugs or did they show up on theri own? i just released a 1000 in my garden last week
my man just bought a bunch for the room and decided to play nice and share some with me.
best part was watching my "god-complex 2 yr old" laugh his ass off whilst flipping them over and watching them right themselves.

Romancing the “River” Stone

March 3rd, 2011 |
Author: Donna

Marcus O’Crotty, my Reiki Master, (now at Crystal Voyage in Tacoma) taught a class on Healing with Stones. He taught how the stones either bring to you an energy you need, or extract from you an energy that no longer serves you. I fell in love with the stones’ earthly healing powers. Before that, I liked stones, but it wasn’t until his class that I felt a deep connection with them.
Marcus O'Crotty

Romancing the “River” Stone
I wrote those words again because I love them! There is a story behind the title, but first we must go back in time, to late spring and through the summer of 2010. It was not a fun time. I wanted to crawl into my cave and not come out. That meant, I didn’t care to see people at home or at work, or write email, or go out and play. It was as if I was meant to “go within” into the stillness. (One of my favorite Bible verses is “Be Still and Know I AM God.” Psalm 46:10)
What I came to realize, as others called or wrote, was that I was not alone and others were also hibernating in the middle of summer. Even now, I do not believe we had a summer in 2010. I missed it completely.
But I digress; back to the story.
One night in late May, I felt one of my river stones calling to me. In my mind, I clearly saw an image of the exact stone that was trying to get my attention. My river stones are in baskets downstairs, so I went downstairs to find the stone that called. The one I was looking for was right on top of the first basket I went to. This dark stone is about 8” around, and smoothed perfectly by the rushing waters of the White River.
That night, I brought this stone to bed with me. Stan didn’t blink an eye. (I can do some of the strangest things and his love never wavers. Ever.) The energy of this stone was soothing and supportive.
Over the next couple of weeks, I continued to sleep with my stone. I even picked out a stone for Stan to sleep with but the next morning I saw it on the floor. He told me it was hogging the bed. Apparently, in his mind, there isn’t room for two soulmates, one Lexi-girl, and two river stones in the same bed.
Donna's Dark Stone & Stan's Stone

Through email, I told a few friends about how I was cuddling with my stone every night. Soon others were writing that they brought their stones to bed with them as well. There was a group of us – all adults – sleeping with stones.
I ended up sleeping with my river stone for over three months and then no longer felt called to do so. Its work was done.
So that is the story behind the title Romancing the “River” Stone……get it? Sometimes, I find myself just too funny!
Stones & Crystals
Many believe in the supernatural properties of stones and crystals including their ability to bring peace, wellness, insight, protection, and connection to higher realms of consciousness. Stones and crystals are beautiful healing treasures from our natural world.
If you feel unsettled, drained, unsupported, or sad, go outside and find a stone that draws your attention. If the stone feels right to you, gather it into your hands, hold it against your heart, and close your eyes. Breathe deep and Let Go and Let God. Allow the spirit of the stone to connect to the grace and heartbeat of Mother Earth.
There are also other ways to connect with the energy of stones. Carry one in your pocket and touch it often. Sleep with your stone and pay attention to your dreams. If you have been hurt emotionally, place a stone on your heart and allow it to do its magic. If you have a headache, lie down on your back and place a stone beneath your neck.
If you use your river stone a lot, like I did last summer, it does become tired and needs a short vacation. When you feel your stone needs a break, take it outside and place it on the grass to recharge. The sun, moon, stars, rain, flowers, and trees, all infuse light into the stone. When you bring it back into the house, you will feel a difference. The stone is ready to offer its healing energy again.
If you aren’t feeling well for any reason (mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually) cuddle with a stone and let Mother Earth cradle you with her love.
Pet Rock Fun

The Pet Rock
In April 1975, Gary Dahl was in a bar listening to his friends complain about their pets. This gave him the idea for the perfect “pet”: a rock. A rock would not need to be fed, walked, bathed, groomed and would not die, become sick, or be disobedient. He said they were to be the perfect pets, and joked about it with his friends. However, he eventually took the idea seriously, and went home and drafted an “instruction manual” for a pet rock. It was full of puns, gags and plays on words that referred to the rock as an actual pet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_Rock
When I was reading about Pet Rocks, I saw an article that said that when Gary told his friends his idea for Pet Rocks, they thought he was stoned. HA!
"Boo!"

ever see the movie "with Honours"? (joe peschi's best work, imo.)
he plays a bum, who has a bag of pebbles that represent memories, and everytime something momentous happens, he picks up a pebble to put with the others. at the risk of sounding like a hippy flake, there is something about this that i relate to very much. but it'll be long long time before i'm bringing rocks to bed. we've spent way too much time picking them out of the main garden this year, my man would think it a sick joke.
