This is a flawed way of looking at it. You should be looking to setup the space with a similar photon density at the canopy as your current HID setup. There is diminishing and even deteriorating results with levels higher than 1500 umol/M^2/s.... If you're already at that point with HID's there...

I think it could be done, but I wouldn't 'hot swap' the circuit. I'd have a relay turn off the ac side when swapping between dc circuits.
