Yeah, you just run a lot of water through the soil then check the water that drains out the bottom. You can use strips but it's better to buy a ph meter, you'll be doing a lot of testing and they are like $10 on ebay.

Could a be a combo of you growing it right + genetics. I've grown autos outside and they only produced around 7-14g dry each. Those were Mi5 and lowryder from shortstuff. What auto are you growing?

If you train the plants wide you will get a better yield. Look at low stress training, scrog, and mainlining to get some examples.

Are the roots getting enough oxygen?

Don't over water it and make sure to keep it ventilated, it should be fine.
