If you're growing "regular" (just a plant in a pot) then you shouldn't have a problem as long as you have a fan blowing to give the main stem some "exercise". On the other hand; if you're growing SCROG, people often experience a lack of support for "heavy tops".

When using the dimmer; does the whole unit actually draw less power (from the wall) - or does the unused power just go up as heat build up?

The reason nobody is answering you is because a cfl is a "compact flourescent light". What you're talking about is a cmh "ceramic metal halide".
