So what's your yield? What's the size of your grow space? How much would expect to yield if you we're running 1000w hps, have you used a 1000w hps as a comparison?

I found I can get away with sucking air through one cooltube, but if I use 2 the heat is to much for the fan....... They seem to cook the bearings and the fans seize. Could be the cheap fans, but its something that should be noted when setting up your Ventilation.

I found with mh bulbs that they are useless after 2 grows, they seem to degrade quickly. Also something that needs to be noted is the bulb rated to be used in a open fixture. A cooltube won't stop a metal halide when it blows and sprays laver through your tent.

Lol nope if it's dimmed it uses less power, I've measured the power at the socket using a lumatek 400w and it uses different amount of power on each setting. Like I said before if your ballast was dissipating 400w of heat you could fry a egg off it. Btw those fan controllers the op posted, yeah...

Purple ballast sounds like a lumatek, and they will lower the wattage. You do relize that if it was still drawing 1000w that energy would be giving off as heat at the ballast. 400w of heat coming off the ballast would be like a heater.

Yeah they would have to be, just about the worst type of light you could select. I'm afraid it's one thing you need to $$$ on. If you want to start out cheap use cfl's or Fluro's But honestly your better saving some dollars for HID lighting.

If your ballast is a select a watt and is set to 400w you're good to roll. If your ballast is dimmable by % then 50% would = 300w 75% would = 450w Yes it would be safe, but I wouldn't drive a 400w bulb with 75% on a dimmable ballast...

You're saying its a lumatek ballast, is it dimmable/adjust a watt? If you can select wattage, just set to 400w and test it with a 400w bulb. If its adjustable by percent then select 50% and try to strike a 400w bulb. Lumatek ballasts a very versatile. I run 430w hps bulbs in my 400w ballast...

Sounds like the bulb, try to borrow 1 to test it. If it works I'd suggest you buy 2 and always keep 1 spare. Edit you said you also have a 400w why don't you dim the 600w and test the 400w bulb in it.

I run 2 6 inch versions of these in a 10x5 tent. Nice and cool with a awesome spread, I don't seem to notice any hotspots, though I only use 400w in each tube. Here's a pic of my last grow running 2 400w mh bulbs.
