As long as you dig a big hole and fill it will good soil. Unless you live on some miraculously fertile land with precious fertilized soil? I'd rather put it in a big pot above ground with good soil.

Look closely at the first pic OP. Is there a tiny little white hair coming out of that "ball looking thing" near your finger? (or go back and take a closer look at the plant.) To me, it looks more like a Female Calyx than a Ball.

Then a pH meter will be your best option.

The purpling could be the temp and genetics? Or it may be the start of another deficiency, possible magnesium? You need a pH meter, otherwise you will be guessing what nutrients your plant needs. Adding more will not help. If you want something to last you a life-time, maybe $100, Blue Labs...

What is the coldest the temperature gets? What's your pH? It does look like a typical N deficiency. Purple could be temperature.

If you're painting lids go with the rubber spray "paint". I find that even black painted lids, when you hold a light close to it, it still is not completely opaque.
